POP3 collection weirdness

Postby Ekkas » Oct 18 04 9:59 pm

I've installed Wingate 6.0.3 for a client and want to set up POP3 collection for them but have a strange error. The same settings in OE or MSO works o.k. and if I set up my own email settings it also works o.k. in Wingate, but not from the client's (ISP)mail-server.

Here is a piece of the log file:

The first part is my own email, but the second "authentication first" errors is the clients'. Please advice me on this. The IT department hosting the 'faulty' mailserver says they have no other email problems, and as I've said other mail-clients works o.k., just not Wingate POP3 collection...

Please help.

The server that is failing is issuing an APOP response back 'OK <17195.1097579247@pamgolding.co.za>'.

The reason it probably works for Outlook is because outlook doesnt issue a CAPA command when talking to the pop server, and from the looks of it you haven't configured the other (your) server to support APOP.

However, WinGate should cope with a CAPA failure and move on, but it seems to have missed out issuing the User command, after AUTH going straight on to issue PASS.

In the properties for this pamgolding.co.za POP Collection, try changing the 'Authentication Method' (on the Account Tab) from 'Use best method available' to User / Pass. You could try APOP but some mail servers issue an APOP command without actually supporting APOP auth, so to start with just try the simple User / Pass, and see if that works.

Hi

I just checked this in the debugger.

Looks like the "PASS ********" log entry is bogus. The command being sent is actually an APOP command, which then failed. The reason why the entry was logged as PASS was a bit of a hack to update session state.

So looks like you are logging into a POP3 server which advertises APOP, but doesn't honour it. Is it an EMWAC server?

I've changed the method to User / Pass and now all is working fine.

Thanks
