cannot download any updates from windowsupdate

Oct 20 04 4:13 am

Since installing the latest version of wingate, I can no longer download any windows updates on our networked PC's. It gets as far as listing the updates, but when you click install it always fails.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Are you using any plugins? How do your clients connect through WinGate? (NAT, NAT + Intercepts, WGIC or direct proxy?)

No, not using any plugins, Clients connect using direct proxy

Okay, I talked to our QA team - they tried it with Windows 2000 and Windows XP and in both cases it worked for them with a direct proxy connection.

Which operating systems are you using? If you switch on debug logging for the DNS and WWW Proxy Services; that might give us an indication of where the problem will be.

Hi,

I have now found that PC's running pre XP still update ok, and Pc's running XP work untill version 5 of windows update is installed. The only exception to this is the main wingate server which has windows update version 5 installed an can still download updates.

So it would appear to be a compatibility issue between windows update v5 and wingate. I have previously downloaded ok from windows update v5, but that was before wingate version 6 was installed.

I will try turning on the debug as requested and report again.

Thanks

That's useful, thank you. I've passed it on to QA.

The computers with v5 of Update - were they running XP SP2? My dev machine is an XP SP2 image, uses version 5.4.2600.0 of wupdmgr.exe (And connects to v5.windowsupd...) and it can collect and install updates when running through a proxy.

One odd thing about it though was it took about 3 to 5 minutes before I saw anything happen in the progress bar, then it completed quickly.

Hi there

I have just tested this here in the lab against an XP machine running service pack 1, and found that after it had installed the version 5 Update software and went into the process of scanning for critical updates, it took several minutes before completing the install of the new updates. Exactly what Pascal had mentioned.

One thing to add however is that the Updater uses an SSL connection (Https:443)when scanning for what critical updates were required on the XP machine. How are your HTTPs settings in the WWW proxy service configured in GateKeeper?

In this scenario just tested there were no specific ports listed.
The "Allow ANY port to be connected" setting was ticked. You may need to check if this is the case in your situation.

Hope our tests help

Erwin

Hi,

We did already have the allow all ports option ticked, but I have now managed to get it working. I have had to specify a Preferred DNS server address on each PC.

I don't really understand why, becase it is not needed prior to version 5, but at least it is now working. If there is a better way of doing this, I would appreciate any help, as otherwise I will have to set the DNS address up on all our PC's

Thanks for your help
