Help with EMail

I am having problems with smtp email. I am using wingate 5.0.7 on NT4.0 server.
Can you please advise how to set up outlook and wingate as I have tried smtp server and proxy and nothing is working. Our isp is mail.connectfree.co.uk and I have this setting in the smtp proxy and also in the email setting for outgoing email. In outlook as the smtp and pop3 settings using the ip address of the wingate server and under username the setting is username#mail.connectfree.co.uk.
We had it working on a windows 98 machine but we have now upgraded to NT we can not get it to work.
