SP2

Postby maxthegold » Oct 31 04 7:50 pm

Is anyone else having trouble with XP SP2? I have recently installed this on client and server XP Pro machines and now the client is unable to connect with Wingate. IE just gives me "Page not Found" all the time. I do get the odd DNS lookup in the History tab in Gatekeeper, but I am not sure where they come from, one for Microsoft, one for McAfee and one for Google. All normal attempts to display pages in IE get nothing at either end. I have been using NAT up to now so I thought I would try WGIC, but when I tried to install it just said it could not find a server?
The other problem I have, unrelated to Wingate, is that I cannot get WEP to work any more.
Any ideas ?

Regards,
Mark.

Most likely the firewall, which is now turned ON by default. Have a look there, probably through the Security Centre. In all the cases it's caused us grief it's been because of that.

Yes, that was the first thing I thought of so I switched the firewall off on server and client.

If you can't find the server from the WGIC can you verify that your adapters are set correctly in WinGate? Make sure that your LAN adapter is set to internal. Check that the WinSock Redirector Service is bound to the internal adapter.

Yes and Yes.
I thought I might try reinstalling Wingate on the server, you never know. The problem is still there but the strange thing was while installing it said that it had detected Internet Connection Sharing and that I should remove it. Well I do not have ICS defined anywhere. Wierd eh!

I have just uninstalled SP2 on the client machine only and hey presto everything works fine again.
I am sorry if I wasted your time but I have been struggling with this damn SP2 for weeks now and I was sure I had finally got everything going, then IE stopped working and I was just completely out of ideas, and energy. I will just have to resign myself to not having SP2 on the client, to this end I have deactivated automatic updating as well, I suppose I'll have to do that manually from now on. I thought these computer thingies were supposed to make life easier?

Regards and thanks,
Mark.
