New Install - Help needed

Postby Profcoll » Apr 05 05 10:21 am

I just installed a trial version of Wingate on a Window 2003 SBS server. I have 10 workstations and the W2k3 SBS SVR on the network. I am using a Watchguard Router for VPN access and I also open port 3389 sometimes so I can more easily access the system remotely.
The only functions I need from Wingate are caching web pages, monitoring the Internet activity of employees and restricting access to certain web sites if necessary. I would also like to generate reports of individual users internet activity including URL's visited. (Screen shots would be great)
PROBLEMS encountered so far:
I no longer have VPN access.
I cannot Remote desktop in from another location.
My internal - Company Web page - is no longer available I get the Page cannot be displayed error in Internet explorer. I cannot access GateKeeper unless I go to the Server. At this point I am very frustrated and I would appreciate any advice.
Thank you,

Dan

W2k3 has it own firewall capabilities. Wingate also has a build-in (and very good) firewall. I gues that they interfere with each other. You have to decide which of them you want to use. If you choose for W2k3 then do not install ENS or at least disable the firewall capabilities of Wingate. Furthermore you have to configure the W2k3 firewall to enable GateKeeper to work on port 808.
You also can disable the W2k3 firewall and configure Wingate to do all the firewalling and proxying. I would prefer this approach because configuration is rather simple and you have one focus point of system management and control at the user level just as you requested.

Hope that this will help.
Regards.
Wim.

Thanks for the reply Wim,
I have the windows 2003 SVR and the wingate firewall turned off.
I did get my company web site to work, the problem was with IIS.
I opened port 808 on a workstation and now I can run Gatekeeper but there is no History when using a remote connection. I still cannot get RDP (via internet) to work and my VPN will no longer work.

Hi Dan,

How did you hook WinGate into the whole mixture? Does it connect to the router with all PCs going through WinGate and thus to the router?

History you can only have if GateKeeper can access the drive. To see history you need to run GateKeeper from the mapped network drive (Or somehow have relative access to it). There are interesting developments in this area for a future release, but that won't help you right now.

As to the other problems, if you give me a brief idea of how everything is connected up and how you provide service to the different machines, etc. I'll try to help more with the other problems.

I have 2 NICS in the W2k3SBS Server.
NIC 1 Is configured with IP address, Subnet mask and DNS (DNS is the same as the IP)
NIC2.
IP, Subnet, Gateway-(router IP address)
Workstations- Static IP. Gateway is the IP address of NIC 1.

Thanks,
Dan

Okay, that looks like you'd be using NAT then. How does your workstations resolve DNS? Are you using 2k3's DNS server?

YES, we are using W2K3 DNS.

I ran GateKeeper on a remote computer from a mapped drive and was able to view the history.

I do not seem to be capturing all of the internet history.
Do then NIC's in my server have to be on separate networks:

Below is how I have my NIC's Configured.

W2K3SBS
NIC 1:
IP 192.168.2.10
Sub 255.255.255.0
Gateway- Blank
DNS 192.168.2.10 and 192.168.11
WINS 192.168.2.10 and 192.168.11

NIC 2:
IP 192.168.2.11
Sub 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.2.1
DNS 192.168.2.10 and 192.168.11
WINS 192.168.2.10 and 192.168.11
(Router IP is 192.168.2.1)

Workstation NIC:
IP 192.168.2.20
Sub 255.255.255.0
Gateway- 192.168.10
DNS 192.168.2.10 and 192.168.11
WINS 192.168.2.10 and 192.168.11
