Can't get Windows Media Player to work from behind WinGate

Postby mbmast » Jun 11 05 4:19 pm

Windows Media Player works fine on the WinGate server, but not on any machine behind the WinGate server.

On WinGate's System Message panel I see the following messages for user htpcuser (the assumed user for a machine behind WinGate):

Authentication failed - user htpcuser on 90.0.0.28 requested NAT: TCP Connection to 69.45.64.19:554

and also...

Authentication failed - user htpcuser on 90.0.0.28 requested NAT: TCP Connection to 69.45.64.19:1755

Normal web browsing works fine on the client machine (90.0.0.28).

What do I need to do to configure WinGate to allow Windows Media Player to work from behind the WinGate server? I'm not very IP literate, so detailed steps would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike.

Hi Mike,

The authentication failures that you're seeing relate to media player trying to access streaming media (554-RTSP, 1755-Microsoft streaming).

Normally connections out from your LAN wouldn't be blocked, but it looks like you're using a public IP address range on your LAN. WinGate has seen this IP address (90.0.0.*) on the WinGate adapter and firewalled it, so connection attempts through WinGate from that IP address are blocked.

You should consider renumbering your LAN so that you are using a private IP address range (we recommend 192.168.*.* but you can also use 10.*.*.* or 172.16.*.*).

If you don't want to renumber your network then change the setting for the adapter so that WinGate treats the adapter as an internal adapter.

Matt,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, the IP address, although not a member of those IP addresses that are private, is considered private by WinGate.

I confirmed this by viewing the adapter on the WinGate tab. Its usage is "Internal."

My WinGate server has two NICs, one outward facing with a static IP assigned by my ISP, the other internal facing with a static address of 90.0.0.1 connected to a switch. All the internal client machines are also connected to this switch with dynamic addressed in the range of 90.0.0.2 thru 90.0.0.30 (or so). I am using the Windows 2000 Server DHCP service, not WinGates DHCP service.

Any other advice for getting Windows Media Player to work on the client machines?

Thanks,

Mike.

Can you post your configuration file, or you can create a support ticket (http://support.qbik.com) and we can get your email address.

The other cause of the problem could be a policy that you have restricting NAT traffic, have you set any policies in the Extended Networking or in the system policies?

In my system policies I had a requirement that Everyone be authenticated. I changed to this Everyone can be assumed (I had previously mapped the machine's IP address to a user on the assumed users tab). This fixed the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion.
