user access block all but certain sites

Postby gid » Aug 12 05 3:44 am

The implementation I need with wingate version 6 is user access per user or group allowing only access to say 4 or five sites.
I'v implemented the ban list method of www proxy server - policies- group - ban list - enable banlist - add - this criterion is NOT met if - HTTP URL 'contain' ibm....

This allow all sites to be block except say www.ibm.com or www.ibmsales.com

BUt I cant add in another item - then all sites are blocked.

Which other implementation can I use to allow only cetain sites to be accessed per user??

IMHO what you did should be right, but you are right it won't work. To Qbik staff - is it by design? As an alternative, instead of using the Ban list go to the Advanced tab and enter the desired sites each under a separate filter.

eg.
Filter 1
HTTP URL contains ibm

Filter 2
HTTP URL contains qbik

etc.

Let us know if this is what you were looking to do.

I think it was by design, but I'm not sure why. If you have mulitple sites that you want to specifically allow it must be done on the advanced tab. The ban list is only for banning access to sites.

Thanks Chris.

Thanks!

I actually tried it that way instead of the ban list method - but could not get it to work. I tried it again with the filters and now it works great.
It only allows sites with the string I specify to be loaded, and adding multiple sites work too.
The only change is I do it for a group and not spesific user - but it could also be because I was still having trouble sorting out the guest user access.

cheers

How can I block sites by criteria? So, instead of blocking certain website, I want to block imporoper/drugs/sex etc websites.

Well, the best way to block sex sites is to use PureSight for WinGate which is a content filter plug-in for the WWW proxy. This allows you to block access to web pages based on the percentage likeliehood that a page contains prohibited content. We are not very far away from releasing PureSight version 2 which will greatly expand the categories that you can scan for, at the moment it is just sex and gambling.

Your other option is to create bans based on HTTP URL contains sex, drugs, etc, but this is not an ideal solution.
