SMTP In (External)

Postby Justin » Sep 15 05 4:28 am

Hi folks

Am having a small issue with SMTP when receiving mail externally. Under the History log the indication is as follows :

Activity : SMTP-In :

And that is it.. nothing further. I am able to send and receive mail internally without issue.

I am running the latest version of Wingate on Windows Adv 2k server.

After enabling debugging the log file contained the following :

User : Guest

Error :
Caught unhandled exception in initialising SMTP Recieve session
Client closed connection unexpectedly expecting HELO - terminating

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thx

1. So no external mail is received by the WinGate server; correct?
2. Has that always been the case?
3. Another person had this problem on the forum, and it was a problem with his router; I have asked what the actual problem was: http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?t=3794
4. When you opened port 25 via ENS --> Port Security, is there any check mark for Syn Cookies?
5. What user database is WinGate using? WinGate / Local NT / Domain NT?

Hi James

1. Correct.. no external mail

2. Unfortunately not

3. I did see that post prior to raising this one, and your query, thanks

4. Interestingly enough port 25 has always been open.. never had to mod ENS... Checked SYN Cookies (was unchecked)... Port 25 indicates (auto) now i did see in another post that someone referenced never having to change the port.. it just appeared.. cold be some validity to that statement.

5. DB is Domain NT

Further to this i have received replies from hotmail servers saying that the message is "delayed"... now i am assuming that my server is not rejecting the mail if that is the case.. but rather is having a problem receiving it... this is supported by the fact that i dont get any denied messages on gatekeeper .. you think this is the case ?

Can you please gather some information, reference this forum post, and send it to sales@wingate.com

1. WinGate Registry
GateKeeper --> Options menu --> Advanced --> Save Registry Settings
2. WinGate Config Report
GateKeeper --> Options menu --> Advanced --> Save Report
3. ipconfig /all
(windows) Start menu --> run --> cmd --> ipconfig/all

If there is nothing obvious in that information, we may ask for you to do a packet capture; will advise.
We will post a result once this issue is fixed.

I sent that email off quite a while ago; I have resent it to your hotmail account. Did you send it from your Wingate server that cannot receive external email? :)

Please could you advise if there has been any movement on this.

Do the devs have any idea what may be causing this ?

He shoots he scores.. hehe

Thankfully i have managed to resolve this problem. As it turns out it was not a Wingate prob.. which i thought was the case in the first place.

As it happens the "experts" who reconfigured my router set it up for netting.. so instead of an external ping recieving the correct address it was recieving an incorrect one. Disabled netting and all was a-ok.. until i tried to access the internet internally.. it was then i discovered they hadnt configured DNS for it either.. fools

Anyways.. i have successfully sent and recieved mail externally without a hitch.

Many thx for your support James.. it has instilled a great deal of confidence in Qbik as a professional company prepared to offer good after sales service to their what is clearly a great product (this is seriously lacking in the IT industry these days). Now all you need to do is open a support branch in South Africa so i dont phone you all hours of the night haha.
