Hi

Are you running the SOCKS server for all access?

Sounds like it could be a DNS error.

Are you able to ping machines by name? i.e. run command line (cmd.exe) type in "ping www.wingate.com"

Do you get back "pinging 210.55.214.36 with 28 bytes of data"

or do you get

"bad host name www.wingate.com"

?

This ping was run on a client machine right?

What settings do you have in Internet Explorer (under tools->Connections->LAN settings)?

SOCKS is a protocol that allows applications to make connections - kinda like a telephone operator, you connect to the SOCKS server, tell it who you want it to connect you through to and go from there.

Internet Explorer supports SOCKS (you would see it at the bottom of the proxy configuration page).

If you are using SOCKS, it requires that DNS be working since it connects (usually) to an IP address.

But if you can resolve names (like www.wingate.com) into IP addresses on your client machines, then it looks like DNS must be working.

we did have a few problems with 5.2.2, but if it was working fine for a long time, then suddenly there is a problem, something must have changed. Maybe a service pack installed on the server?

Hmmm

WinGate 5.2.2 is quite old now. We made significant changes to the DNS server, DNS resolver and HTTP proxy in later versions of WinGate.

If you upgrade to WinGate 6 you can still use your WinGate 5 license, that may have fixed this problem already. We did have some problems with Windows 2000 SP4 as well in earlier versions (my memory on it is a bit hazy, but it's quite possibly the version you are running).
