Dial up backup for cable connection (Presale/configurationQ)

Postby skaterdad » Oct 30 05 9:57 am

We have a cablemodem with a normal Nat Router/Switch behind it providing DHCP, etc. This works 99% of the time for our small home LAN (2-3 PC's), however our cable provider has recently had frequent outages. I'm looking to find out if Wingate can meet our needs. The thought is that we can inexpensively add a dial-up account, modem, etc. on one of the PC's. When the cable modem goes out, I'd like to be able to fire up the PC with the modem and Wingate and let it serve as the new shared connection. I'm sure there is a way to do this, but it's not clear to me. I'd rather not have to have the PC with wingate and modem sitting "on" all the time, I'd like it to be fired up on demand, figure out that there is no good connection through the Netgear WGR615, dial out and get a modem connection. What I cannot grok is how I get the other PC's to "see" this connection, as they're gateway is pointed towards the Netgear...

Anyone care to comment on feasibility, configuration, etc.?

Hi Skaterdad,

When I wrote this post, I was thinking you are using a WinGate server. But from what I have reread, you have NAT connection to the internet via the cable modem, and you want to set it so when the cable modem is down, to fire up a different gateway. What software will you run to invoke this?

Will it be
a) LAN Computers --> WinGate --> Cable or Dialup
b) LAN Computers --> Some other SW --> WinGate server if cable down

1. The modem could be on another computer, but I have configured it in this example as if it is on the WinGate computer.

So first thing is to setup the dialer to work with your modem.

Then go to the WWW Proxy Service and configure the Gateway option (Some other services have the gateway option too)
