Should I use WinGate - will it solve my problem?

Postby tom_goodacre » Mar 22 06 5:38 pm

Hello,

I am working with a network of around 30 PC's that are on a domain controlled by Windows 2003 server. We currently have two internet connections (1 X ADSL and 1 X Satellite). At the moment both of the internet routers are connected to the LAN through a switch. Using the Windows 2003 server DHCP service I have specified two default gateways (one for each of the internet connetions) for each of the clients.

The problem:

If one internet connection fails (it quite often does) then I want all clients to automatically use the other functioning internet connection. However, the current method I am using does not work correctly at the moment as the internet routers address is still available when the ADSL link fails (it's the PPP link that goes down not the ethernet link) so windows thinks the internet gateway is still functioning.

Will WinGate allow me to overcome this problem? Will it allow clients to automatically switch to another internet connection if one goes down, even if the ethernet link remains? Can I be sure that WinGate will not interfere with my DHCP and DNS services running on the Windows 2003 server? Will I have to install 3 network cards for this to work correctly - one for each of the WAN routers and one for the LAN?

My last question...Is it possible to route certain client IP's just through one of the internet connections?

Your help and advice would be much appreciated.

Tom

Hmmm.... Wingate dead gateway detection is based on detecting whether the router still replies to the ARP messages... Which in your case it will - is that right?
