Bandwith Control : How to?

Postby Funaki » Jul 05 06 7:48 am

i have a user on my network who uses a lot of bandwith. Warned him so many times but its a no go.i downloaded wingate to see if its any help.Got it all running and fine. i have a question..say how can i limit particular computer or user from only using 50mb a day or 75. So at the start of every day the user gets 75mb when he used that then the internet stops for him. ANy help is appreciated..

Thanks

You can either set a policy for the user to limit the amount of data he/she is allowed to pump through wingate and then clean the balance for this user daily or you can set up a bandwidth throttling rule with the averaging window set to, say, 8 hours and bandwidth limit to 50Mb - this will allow the user to consume up to 50Mb quite rapidly and then stop pumping traffic through for this client.

You need to set up a scheduled event to roll over that users accounting each day. Then create a policy in a place that will catch all his requests passing through WinGate; i.e. to allow for the different connection methods.

NAT = Extended Networking Service Policy.
WinGate Internet Client (WGIC) = WinSock Redirector Service Policy
Proxy = Any particular service.

Your desired result could be set in the System Policies (Default Rights), but it depends how your Server / Services are set to interact with the System Policies. http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?p=23285#23285

The Policy to restrict a user’s limit will look like this.

Advanced tab of the user’s policy:

Filter 1.
This criterion is met if User: Bytes received for client Is Less Than 50000000

With the bandwidth throttling, I think Genie is saying create a restriction with the amount of the bandwidth speed he is allocated, then when you create the rule, have the Control Max TCP Windows box checked. For the source address it will be similar to this format, 192.168.0.2 / 255.255.255.255
