Multihomed server 3 nics setup. Comments please.

Postby deftech » Jul 13 06 9:20 am

I have a win2ksp4 server with 3 nics. I have subnetted (I think) my ip traffic into 2 different sides. I dont know if by doing this, I slowed things down, or creating problems.

nic1=10.0.0.1 255.255.255.0 (upstairs network)
nic2=10.0.1.0 255.255.255.0 (downstairs network)
nic3=external ip (WAN)

Wingate seems to work fine for the most part, but every so often traffic will just stop, and I have to restart the engine. Sometimes it's once a week, sometimes takes 3 weeks. It's very itermittent.

I have read on this forum briefly that routing problems can occur with multiple internal nics like I have setup, is this the case? Can one of you elaborate on this? Do I not have the subnets defined properly or something?

What is an ideal setup for Wingate? 2 nics only?

I'm just curious, I wouldn't mind taking out one of the internal nics's if you guys recommend so.

I hope this all makes sense. :)

Hi,
What version of Wingate are you using?

Wingate does not impose any restrictions on the number of NICs - we have machines with 4 NICs running here with no problem and our customers reported far more than that.

Ok cool, so the multiple nic setup is not my problem then. Thanks for the comment.

I am on 6.1.4.

I will keep an eye on it, and let you guys know if I find anything.

want to share

Postby deftech » Jul 21 06 4:33 am

I just wanted to share what my problem was with POP3 collection locking up. It turned out not to be wingate at all.

Our external mail server was getting mailbombed, so EXIM our mta software was getting denial of service'd. This was bogging the mail server down so much that when wingate went to collect mail from it, it would appear hung, but in actuality was taking forever to get a response.

So basicall a DDOS attack on exim was causing our problem externally and internally. We eventually configured exim in a way to counter the ddos attack, so all is well.

:)) Yay for....hot girls who like computers?

P.S. If anyone out there knows a good way to brainwash your wife into playing computer games, let me know!
