Wingate not working

Postby Chris » Dec 08 03 11:02 pm

I've installed the server element and all appears OK. The network is running fine, but the client doesn't have access to the internet. There is no icon showing that Wingate is running on the client, and no connection details in the internet configuration dialogue screens, but I do have the Client configuration icon in the settings part of windows. I've looked in the gatekeeper section, network page, and the server can see the client through the network.

I've been trying to sort this out for about 10 days now and have run out of ideas!

Chris,

There are generally 3 methods for the user to connect to the Internet.

1. NAT - default gateway on client machine points to WinGate Server.
2. WWW Proxy - Connections settings in IE point to the WinGate Server.
3. WGIC - setup to communicate with the WinGate server.

Which are you using. I think from you message you're using WGIC but want to be sure.

What version of WinGater are you using.

Can you ping the WinGate server from the client.

Hi

I don't know why, but two things have changed... I only have one icon (the gatekeeper) in the server taskbar (nothing in the client) and I can no longer see the client from the gatekeeper (note: I have just returned home to try and solve this problem and the client is now visible from within gatekeeper!)

Network working normally thru windows.

I'm using WGIC. Wingate 5.2.0.

Hope this helps

So on the client machine in the WGIC applet, under the Servers tab you can see your server machine?! Have you also added a DNS entry to the WGIC machines TCP /IP properties?! This DNS entry should be the IP of the WinGate machine.

If you try and use direct proxy from the client (by adding it to IE) rather than the WGIC, can you conenct out then?!

Regards

That seems a bit better... I've added the IP to the DNS setting on the client... and now I have a modem like icon on the toolbar. But I seem to remember this icon on the server as well when I saw it at a friends house... but I currently do not have this icon on the server toolbar. Is there another setting to be changed on the server?

Update...
Well I've now been waiting several days for assistance in this matter. In your instructions it sates that Wingate works with no further configuration... my apraisal licence runs out in a couple of days and I have yet to be able to use this software... not what I expected from a company of your stature! I am on the verge of giving up and testing a competitors product... what I need is a simple, stable solution to internet sharing... that also has a reliable support infrastructure should I require it... at the moment wingate has none of these atributes!
