Help for n00b Wingate setup

Postby hermes » Feb 04 07 4:23 pm

Hi; I just installed Wingate 6 & being a complete newbie re networking; would really appreciate some easy to understand help for setting up Wingate.

What I want to do (and why I bought Wingate) is to monitor internet use by all other computers (pref to show urls of sites visited, and if possible, block certain sites). I also want to monitor what computers are connected to the internet at what time, and pref. their up/downloads (some family members are using a LOT of my internet limit of 25gig and I want to find out which of them & what sites are responsible); also to block the teenagers from visiting certain sites (self explanatory).

System Config - connect to internet through Netgear 834G V2 ADSL + wireless modem/router. Wep 64bit (yes, I know it's not that secure...) enabled on router for network security. All computers running XP home SP2. Also all run Norton Systemworks. Also got a printer shared between the computers (doesn't work though!) and a Lacie 250G portable hard drive networked & directly connected to Computer A
Computer A (desktop/server) - connected via D-Link wireless usb to modem & the following client computers -
Computer B - laptop - connected thru ethernet cable to modem
Computer C - desktop - ethernet cable to modem
Computers D-F - laptops - connected to modem via wireless (infrequent)

I installed Wingate on Computer A so as to use this machine as a server. I have manually set IP address range on the router from 192.168.0.1 - 6. Router is no. 1 and Computer A is no. 2. DHCP is enabled.

Now, my main question is; how do I set up the other machines so I can see when they are logged in, what they are looking at etc? Do I setup Wingate for client; on each computer and what settings do I need to put in so they access the internet through Wingate & do I need to do a transparent proxy (whatever that is...)

If anyone can tell me this in very simple language, step by step, preferably with screenshots; i will be very grateful!

Thanks very much
Heather

Heather, is there any way you can use an ethernet cable to Netgear from WG machine? I ask, because when you set up WG you want all internet traffic to go to WG machine so policies can be applied there. This will mean a lot more ethernet traffic on this wireless link and IMHO you would be better served with a hardwired connection because of a higher bandwidth available. Not that it can't be done with wireless.

What you want from WG can be readily accomplished.

Wingate setup

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply. The answer to your question is yes, but it will require some physical logistics (the main machine is some distance from the modem; but I can transfer the d-link modem to the desktop, and perhaps the laptop machine can install a wireless card). So, yes, I can do this, if it will make it easier.
Thanx

Let's try with wireless first. You will want to have the WG machine to be the DHCP server and not the NEtGear router - so disable DHCP server on router but make sure it still has IP of 192.168.0.1. Then on WG machine (wireless usb tcp/ip properties) set a static IP of 192.168.0.2, Net MAsk 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway and DNS to 192.168.0.1. Open WinGate GateKeeper, double click DHCP service, double click DHCP Setttings, double click 192.168.0.x icon then double click 192.168.0.x - 192.168.0.254 to get to Scope properties. What you want to do here is tell the WG DHCP service to exclude addresses 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2. So under the Excluded address add the addresses as required then OK your way back out. Then click on the Save icon in GateKeeper to save the settings.

You will need to renew all other machines IP addresses by either rebooting them or going into WinXP network connections, right click the LAN card icon and choose repair from the menu. Now all machines will get their IP addresses and default GAteway from the WG machine and all internet traffic will go through WG. You will be able to see activity using GAteKeeper.

Once you have this part operational you can begin to set up policies to suit your needs. There are some good tutorials at http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=knowledgebase&_j=subcat&_i=2

Hi, thanks, I have done what you asked; but when I open up Scope, it says allocate IP addresses in the range, and the range is from 0.0.0.0 - 0.0.0.0; should it be 198. etc... instead? Also, it didn't seem to affect the other computers; so I suspect I did something wrong?

I can click on network, and see the computers, but cannot see their activity; only my activity...ie. when I log into gatekeeper.

Cheers

Heather, Yes the Range should be 192.168.0.3 to 192.168.0.254 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 you can enter those values in the appropriate boxes. Adjust that, then save the updated configuration by clicking the save icon. Also, if you right click the WG icon in the system tray you can select to stop and restart the WG engine. So just for good measure stop and restart WG engine after as well. Try that and see what happens.

Use Router as DHCP Server No

Wireless connection s/b internal. Your NetGear router should have IP of 192.168.0.1 and your USB wireless IP on WinGate server should be 192.168.0.2 with DNS and Gateway set to IP of Netgear router.
