forcing internet traffic through 1 of 2 nics in 1 pc

Hi all, i'm hoping someone will be able to tell me if this is something that wingate can help me with before i spend time installing it and trying to figure it out myself.

Basically i have 5 pcs on a switch using a router connected to a cable modem to access the internet.

I want one of these 5 pcs to use a 2nd cable modem plugged directly into a 2nd nic that i've installed for internet access instead of going through the switch + router + 1st cable modem.

I've managed to manually set the ip of this pcs nic that is connected to the switch + router and blocked internet access using the router's filtering tools. Well, htp and udp at least, i'm guessing any other protocol will go straight through.

The 2nd nic is working and correctly gaining an ip via the isp behind it's personal cable modem, but for whatever reason the pc insists on trying to use the wrong nic to access the internet.

Can i use wingate to force this pc access the internet via it's 2nd nic or is there some other way that i've missed?

Hi,

Yes this should be possible, you could tell the proxy to use the 'Gateway' feature to route from the desired NIC.

Perhaps for this one user / pc it could be worthwhile to create a second proxy service [just right click the WWW proxy and select 'Clone Service] and put it on another port / 3128 / 8080 and point it directly to the desired NIC in the 'Gateway' feature.

Actually i managed to fix the problem without running any software.

Basically the nic that was connected to the switch + router + 1st cable modem had been manually configured with the router as it's default gateway.

Apparently default gateway settings apply to the entire pc not just that network connection. I left the manually set ip and subnet mask, deleted the default gateway entry and now it's all working properly.

Though i wouldn't have figured this out if i hadn't downloaded the wingate help files and read through the release notes for version six, which mentioned the 'route' command. I took a look at it and spotted the default gateway entry straight away.
