What is System postmaster address?

Postby tj » Feb 21 08 5:14 pm

Hi guys,

How to use the mailserver in wingate?

I have an email account in roadtruckertest.com which is a POP3 mail and I want it to be added on the wingate, how am i suppose to do it in the mail server configuration?

I am using WinGate 6.2

Whenever I enter a domain and add a email address handler and after I press the Ok button, there's an error message i.e. Please check postmaster address is valid and it jumps me to:
Mail Server -> Misc Settings
to enter Please the fully qualified DNS name of this machine as it is known to others
Server domain name :
System postmaster address (required) :

I don't know what to input in there. What should I do?

THanks in advance.

posmaster address is the address that certain system mails are sent from

for instance if:

A message is retrieved through the POP3 proxy and AV scanning shows it to be infected, the message will instead be replaced with an error message that is sent from the postmaster address.

A list message is processed to a list recipient that cannot be delivered to, and the list is configured to send delivery error notifications to the postmaster, then this address will be used to notify list delivery failures.

If WinGate cannot deliver a mail, then a delivery failure message will be sent to the original sender. The from address inside the mail (not the return path for SMTP) uses the postmaster address. This would be the address that a human replying to the bounce message would use, but not an automated reply (otherwise could create message loops).

So basically just enter an address in there that will be administering the domain. Normally postmaster@yourdomain, which you would alias to your mail system admin.
