RDP

Postby jbdubu » Sep 19 08 4:01 pm

I have a cable modem connected to a router that has an IP of 192.168.2.1. The WAN side of my WinGate server is 192.168.2.45. The LAN side of my WinGate server is 192.168.1.44. The 2003 server that I would like to RDP into from the internet is 192.168.1.3.

How do I configure the Router and the WinGate software to allow port 3389 open through both and allow the traffic to reach the server?

Thanks in advance for your input!

To port map your modem/router, check out this page:
http://www.portforward.com/english/appl ... pindex.htm

With Regards to your WinGate settings, I could envisage a few scenarios depending on your setup.

1. If Your 2003 box has a default gateway set to 192.168.1.44 and the network card on your WAN side of WinGate is set to EXTERNAL within WinGate, then you should just need navigate to GateKeeper --> Extended Networking Service --> Port Security, and Add in the rule:

Internet Computer to WinGate PC
Port 3389 to 3389
Redirect packet to IP Address 192.168.1.3 and port of 3389
Enable, Don't Translate Source IP.

2. 1. If Your 2003 box has a default gateway set to 192.168.1.44 and the network card on your WAN side of WinGate is set to INTERNAL, then you should just need navigate to GateKeeper --> Extended Networking Service --> Port Security, and Add in the rule:

Local Computers to WinGate PC
Port 3389 to 3389
Redirect packet to IP Address 192.168.1.3 and port of 3389
Enable, Don't Translate Source IP.

3. If Your 2003 box does not have a default gateway set to 192.168.1.44 then you should just need to Navigate to GateKeeper --> Services tab and:

Right Click the WWW Proxy Service and select New Service --> TCP Mapping Service
Name the Service RDP to 192.168.1.3
Port 3389 (Assuming that port is available on WinGate service; i.e. that Remote Desktop is not enabled on WinGate Server)
Enable "Enable Default Mapping to"
Enter the server address of 192.168.1.3, Port number 3389
Select the Binding Option, and either binding it to an INTENRAL or EXTERNAL adapter; which ever one your WAN one is marked as.

*I presume you will not need help with the policies.
**Beware of any security suites enabled on either the WinGate or 2003 box; the Windows Firewall is best disabled in the Windwos Services for the sake of testing.

Excellent reply! I will work with the applicable scenario and let you know how it goes.

Currently the hardware router(192.168.2.1) is set to port forward 3389 directly to the server (192.168.1.3). I assume I leave that in tact and tell the WinGate server what to do with that request when it passes through (ie. let it pass through to the 1.3 address.)

My main concern here was the tranlation from the 2.x network (the router and the WinGate server) and the 1.x network (the server and workstations.)...

Thanks again!

When you want to forward a port from your router to a computer on the internal network, you should configure your router to forward that port to the WinGate computer, then configure WinGate to forward that port to the client computer. So I recommend reconfiguring the port forward on your router to redirect port 3389 to the WinGate computer, rather than the client computer on the internal subnet.
