Upgraded to Wingate 5.2.2 and vpn connection now hangs

Postby michelew22 » Jan 06 04 4:58 pm

Hi all,

I used Wingate 4.x for quite some time and never had any problems. I use NAT on the client and a vpn connection software that connects me to work. Once I upgraded to Wingate 5.2.2, connections through the vpn software now hang. I can connect to the vpn, load up a browser or other application and it stops after about 5 seconds or so.

If I connect the computer directly to the internet without using Wingate, the vpn connection works just fine. Is there some unknown setting that may need tweaking (like MTU) that may be causing the hang when I use Wingate?

I tried to re-install my older version of Wingate but unfortunately the loader will no longer install the older version. :sigh:

Please help! :)

Hi Michele,

If you attempt to restart the VPN connection, can you do that or is the WinGate Engine itself in a hung state ?

Hi,

Thanks for responding so quickly. No, the Wingate engine seems to be fine. I can connect to the vpn as many times as I'd like. It's just that the connection hangs once I'm in after about 5 seconds. Unfortunately, I don't even get an error message ... it just hangs.

What's so puzzling is that this used to work with older versions of Wingate, and it also works if I just plug the machine in directly without the Wingate software.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi Michele,

What VPN software is this ? (So I can go check the appropriate protocols, etc. that it uses) This is most likely a fairly simple configuration change, but I'll need to read up on the VPN product first.

I figured this out. It turned out to be a problem with the MTU setting on the ME box. I had to adjust the MTU setting on the ME box. It was set to 1400, but it needed to be revised to 1372. (I found this number by doing a ping -l -f packet size from ME machine to XP machine until I got the exact number that wouldn't fragment. Then I subtracted 20 from that number. I found this info at dslreports.com). I don't think this was a Wingate issue, but it's curious that the older version of the Wingate software didn't have the problem.

Thanks for trying to help,

Michele

Excellent. I think a knowledge base article is coming up. Can you tell me what the software is, so we can add it to the list, please ?

Sure, the vpn software is Cisco VPN 5000 Client 5.0.12. I don't think it's even supported by Cisco anymore, but it's the one we still use at work.
