itx motherboard proxy server

Hello,
I want to use a fanless itx motherboard with Wingate as a proxy server. The mother board has a 1.2 GHz processor and 1G of memory. I have installed two hard drives of form a RAID system. I assume that XP Pro is adequate to operate Wingate to provide an internet attachment point, data basing, visus filtering, etc. Any other things I need to do to create this proxy server?

Hi

XP has some limitations that reduce its effectiveness as a proxy platform. Since SP2, MS introduced a limit on the number of half-open connections (in the process of being set up). This is set to 10, which is easy to hit with a proxy. There are patches to TCPIP.sys which get around this, but they aren't supported by MS. Automatic updates occasionally would remove this patch as well. The server OSes don't have this limitation.

If you want to do virus filtering, CPU usage will increase. Which version of WinGate are you looking at? How many users on your LAN?

Five or less users. Are you suggesting that I have to use a Linux based OS? I wanted to use the latest WinGate version, of course. I have tried a Linux OS and had some other problems. Is Windows 7 any better? I am open to any suggestions.

for 5 users or so, XP should be fine. Otherwise I'd recommend 2k3 server. Windows 7 etc are quite hungry for resources for your scenario.
