client won't make server dial out

Postby giltheissen » Jan 24 04 2:19 pm

Hello;
Running Wingate 5.07. Server is XP Pro using dialup modem and client is WinME using a static IP address.
Problem is I can't figure out how to make the client get the server to dial out. If I establish a connection first on the Wingate server, then the client shares the connection quite nicely and I can even disconnect server via the client. But when I try to establish a connection first with the client, I get "server cannot be found". Restting Client with the applet had no effect .
Any suggestions as to what the problem might be? Thanks -- Gil Theissen

p.s. sorry for cross-posting, I initially posted this in the VPN forum by mistake

Also like to add that on the wingate server, the box marked "Allow Request to initiate dialer" in DNS service properties, IS checked and client still can't dial out.
Thanks again -- Gil Theissen

G'day Gil,

Couple of thoughts,

Enable debug logging.

Try upgrading to Wingate 5.2.2 to see if that is solution.

Enable the "access" for everyone in the dialer profile then try modifying the right to at least 'user must be assumed' have found unless I do this the dialer is self hitting here [by firewall hits & is opposite to your issue].

Remove any dialing restrictions eg: Don't dial for sites containing msn.

Good luck

Nev.

Hi Nev and thanks for the suggestions. I solved the problem but did so by uninstalling and reinstalling, but this time WITHOUT ENS. I don't know enough about networking to know if that's supposed to make a difference, but it did.
I do have another question. Can the client be easily configured to be able to dial out all by itself IF the Wingate server PC is turned off. I assume I could go back into TCP/IP properties and delete the default gateway and disable DNS, but I was wondering if there's an easier way, so the others in the family could connect directly if my PC happens to be off.
Thanks - Gil Theissen
