WHAT IS THIS TELLING ME??????

Postby Warren » Feb 17 04 9:45 am

Hi To ALL,

I runup my Wingate/Internet Connection Server this morning and as usual checked into Wingate to see all was well; as it usually is, but this time, I received the following GateKeeper message: "Connection with Wingate server terminated." This message was superimposed on a blank Control Menu. On the Windows Task Bar, the icon is showing a blinking envelope. I have tried reloading Wingate from the installation file, but the results are the same. One point is that the Wingate Proxy Server still seems to be working as I still have Internet access from my Client machine.

Any thoughts and suggestion to remedy this situation would be appreciated.

If you run netstat -an can you see something listening on port 808 TCP ? It is possible that your Remote Control Service is having a problem. You can re-create this service automatically by deleting the registry entry for it.

To do this (Note, all registry editing warnings apply - make a backup, etc.)

1. Open regedit
2. Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Qbik Software\WinGate\Services"
3. Locate "Remote Control Service"
4. Delete that registry key.
5. Restart the WG Engine.

On that restart of the engine, the Remote Control Service will be recreated.

Hi Pascal,

Been there, done that.

Yes, the Remote Control Service were shown as listening on 808. Deleted the Registry Key and restarted WinGate Engine. Still have the same message showing.

Any other suggestions??

My next suggestion would have been a potential policy issue, but a recreate of the service should have left it in a state where you can log in.

You're logging in locally, correct, with the "Log into Local Machine" checkbox checked ?

Also, what version of WinGate - and is it a full license (Plus/Pro) or a Trial license ? An expired trial license should not cause that problem, especially if it's still allowing you to connect through proxies, etc. but should just check that.

Hi Pascal,

Problem Solved??

Not sure why, but I usually have WinGate logged in permanently under "Administrator". I tried logging in with the name of the user for the Server (distinct from Administrator) and the Control Panel burst into activity with Full Living Colour. If you understand why, let me know. If not, I can live with the log-in as is.

Sorry for taking up your time. I should have tried this first.

Nothing more.

Regards, Warren

Are you using NT userdabase, WinGate or a mixture ?

P.S.

Full Licence (not trial), Type 4 Plus, 6 Users, Version 5.2.2 (Build 892)

While I have your attention, two small matters.

1. I have 2 Wingate Icons on the Task bar. One is a single monitor and the other is a double monitor. The second icon "double monitor" appeared sometime last year after an update. Both open the Control Panel. How can I get rid of the "2 Monitor Icon"?

2. When a WinGate Update is available and is loaded onto the server: "Is it a good idea to take the update to the Clients and reload the Internet Client"??? I have worked OK without doing this, but???

No urgency for a reply.

Thanks for the rapid replies

The second icon is for management of VPNs. You can remove it from your Start->Programs->Startup folder. (WinGate VPN Monitor).

No, you shouldn't need to reload to the clients. Major upgrades to WGIC are covered by installable releases.
