PC Anywhere

If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it. I am running Wingate 4.4.2. I am trying to set up PC Anywhere to run from my home computer to my work computer (Wingate Client). I have been trying to read about how to set it up so that it can get beyond the Wingate Host, but have so far been unable to do so. If anyone could provide me with a "setting up PC Anywhere with Wingate for Dummies" I'd be very much appreciative. Here is some more information:

Home Computer - running Windows XP
Wingate Host - running Windows 98 SE
Wingate Client - running Windows XP

I am confused as to where the PC Anywhere should be configured, on my Wingate Client Computer, or does it need to be installed on the Wingate Host as well.

PCAnywhere need only be installed on the client.

On the WinGate Server you'll need:

TCP Mapping service accepting connections on the external NIC of the WinGate Server on Port 5631. Mapped to the same port on the IP of your client.

UDP Mapping service accepting connections on the external NIC of the WinGate Server on Port 5632. Mapped to the same port IP of your client.

On the remote computer you specify the external IP of the WinGate server to connect to.

If you have the WinGate Firewall enabled you'll have to open these two ports for connections from the Internet.

This should be all you need to make a connection.


You may have heard this before but - make sure you have a strong username/password for PCAnywhere on that client. These ports are very well know by the bad folks and as soon as they discover them they'll attempt to attack your system.

If possible I'd recommend you change the ports in the PCAnywhere configuration of the host and remote and make the matching change in the TCP/UDP mappings.

Thanks for getting back to me. You mentioned that I needed to set up TCP & UDP Mapping Services to accept connections on the external NIC of the Wingate Server on port 5631 and map it to the same port of my client - can you tell me how to do this? Is there somewhere I could figure out how to do this?

Larry,

I followed all of the steps, but still can't seem to get it working. I added the TCP & UDP mapping services, set up the Wingate Client to be the host computer for PC Anywhere, but when I tried to connect from home, it couldnt' get a connection. I tried using both the Wingate Host IP address as well as the Wingate Client IP Address.

I'm sorry to bother you will all these questions, do you know anything else I could try?

Jen,

OK - what kind of connection does WinGate have to the Internet? e.g. Dial Up, ADSL, T1?

Be sure in the Bindings tab on both services you're binding to the external interface of WinGate.

In the Interface tab be sure the internal interface is specified.

In the Logging tab - Log these Events - Request Details. That way we can see what's happening when you try to connect.

You will attempt to connect from PCA remote to the WinGate external IP address.

Don't give up. We'll get ya through this.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you - I've been trying to figure this out. The connection Wingate has to the internet is through DSL. The computer I'm trying to set up from home is DSL also. We've tried everything, and still can't get a connection to go through.

OK, some things to try.

1. Can you ping the WinGate server from the remote location?

2. Does your WinGate server connect through a router or other device that may have a firewall that's blocking things?

Hi Larry,

After giving up for a few weeks, I finally tried to get Wingate to work with PC Anywhere again last night. I managed to connect...once. After that, when I click to start the host, I get the message "Unable to attach to specified device". I think it has something to do with the way I've set up the TCP & UDP mapping in Gatekeeper - could you possibly tell me where I can get those instructions for setting up the TCP & UDP Mappings again?

I can't figure why it would work once and fail. The WinGate settings would not change.
