EMAIL Lists

Postby david carnes » Apr 05 14 6:38 am

HI all. Beginning to find my way around wingate 7.

I have a number of domains, and some have a number of Group Email Lists.
Service groups, EXECboard, ALlmembers.
Lots of people have strange email address, and instead of keeping a separate xref, I found I could
enter the email address for the list as Firstname Lastname<thehorsesgotout@gmail.com> so I would know who these people are.

Works fine for sending email to the list from the owner, but just debugged some users who where allow to send to the list stopped working if I had updated their entry for clarification. Just wanting to confirm that I now need 2 entries one to post from and one to send to as in

Joe Rider<thehorsesgotout@gmail.com> receives post, can't send - if allow to send to list, seems can't find entry 550 error in log (and not sent)
thehorsesgotout@gmail.com does not receive post, yes can sent to list

Or is there another format that would solve this problem

ALso double checking, Can a list entry, send to another List.
Parents list
Kids List

All list, just has parents and kids in it. (and a sender person)

HI David

are you using the same address <thehorsegotout@gmail.com> for all the members? Or is this just an example?

WinGate list processing only makes decisions (whether to post or not, and whether user can send) based on the actual email address part (between the < and > ). To see if someone can post, it tests the reply address for the mail (SMTP return path) against the address in the list.

So normally you shouldn't need 2 entries per person. But I'm not 100% sure how it treats those addresses if you are putting extra information in there. We have a function that we must be using to parse the email address out of a string, which must be why it's working in some cases for you, but I'm not sure if we use that in all cases (e.g. checking who can post). I guess you could probably solve this by 2 entries, one with the name, and one without.

List members can be other lists so you can nest them.
