Secure config to check email remotely?

Postby mikebos » Mar 05 04 7:36 pm

Hi,

I've been using Wingate email server for years serving our Domain and LAN well.

Our ISDN dialin has had problems forcing us to check email remotely via the net. I turned on relaying to allow remote check, now we forward everyone spam.

How do I configure Wingate email to allow authenticated remote net based mail services without relaying the worlds spam.

There is a fairly detailed desciption of how WinGate's email security works here:

http://www.wingate.com/resources.php?id=12

This explains a number of different ways you could have WinGate mail set up, to only allow authenticated clients to send through you.

Neil,

That link is for an online guide so similar to the Wingate help I can't pick any differences.

As I understand it using Outlook the only way we can authenticate SMTP is with NTLM which requires using NT for it's user database instead of Wingate so I can't remotely manage users using Gatekeeper.

Is there some other way???

On a similar thread, if I use Outlook on the Wingate server to check my mail it usually succeds checking one or 2 accounts but fails on subsequent usually timing out sometimes Wingate reports it couldn't lock the user account.

Any ideas?

Well yes you are kind of right. It depends which version of Outlook you are using. Outlook XP and forward have an option to 'Pop before SMTP' so this would be one way you auth for SMTP connections but with teh WinGate database. But for older versions i think you are right, they only do support NTLM.

So do you mean you use Outlook to check WinGate mail on the same machine? When you get that lock error, if you look in the pop dir of the user you are trying to check, do you see a lock file in there? Would more than one person be trying to check this account at any one time?

Secure SMTP

Postby mikebos » Mar 09 04 12:49 pm

Hi Neil,

Lucky for me I'm using Office Outlook XP, I can't see how, so how do I 'Pop before SMTP'

On the lockfile issue. Until Telstra can fix my ISDN dialin problem or I can securely check mail remotely and not use relaying I am having Wingate to deliver my remote mail directly to me at home with Wingate email installed.

So now Outlook is on at the same PC for Wingate email. We have seperate user accounts for Wife, Accounts, Me, so customers receive mail with appropriate reply address. Outlook checks all accounts at the same time. If I look in the POP User account when Outlook reported an error it has or did have a $LockFile in it.

Hope it all helps

To turn on 'Pop before SMTP' do the following: From the Menu bar select Tools - Email Accounts - View or change existing email accounnts - Next - select your account and click 'Change' - in the dialogue entitled Internet Email Settings (Pop3) the button in the bottom right hand corner says 'More Settings ' - in the next screen that pops up there is a tab called Outgoing Server. Tick 'My outgoing server (smtp) requires authentication' and then select the bottom radio button says 'Log on to incoming mail server before sending mail'. Now you should auth with Pop and then be able to send securely.

So do all three accounts get delivered in to the same mail box, ie the same pop dir? Or is there 3 seperate pop dirs that Outlook is checking?

Neil,

I'm going to have to try harder reading the greyed out options before annoying you in future.

On the $LockFile, we have three seperate user accounts in Wingate and Outlook, else Outlook only attaches one signature and reply email.

I'm aware that different email addresses can be created in Wingate and delivered to any selected user account, but then I can't send emails wearing the accounts department hat.

Any suggestions???
