Postby Gipper » May 11 04 6:39 pm

Using wingate ove half our emails are ending up in the holding folder and never getting sent. Htere are emails there from last week.

I am never sure which ones will get sent and which ones will be stuck in this void called holding

Any help please is appreciated as we are ready to turf Wingate!!!

To get a handle on the issue, for delivery do you use a gateway or deliver directly.

What is under the domains directory also?

This phenomenom can happen if the registry is restored and copies of sent messages are kept in the 'sent' directory. If a message exists in that directory which is the higher than the SMTPUID in the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Qbik Software\WinGate\Settings\Mail

then they will appear to be stuck there, although actually sent to recipients.

Solution for this problem is to navigate to the key above and make the value equal to the highest message name in the sent folder.

All applicable warnings apply with regard to editing the registry, backup first...

If neither above, report back and someone will take it further.

Good luck.
Nev.

Hi Nev.

You have to be the first person that I have found in many months of searching, who seems to know a bit about what causes this problem. I had always though it had nothing to do with Wingate, so was looking at everything else. Mainly my e-mail program. About 5 months ago I tossed Windows 98 and did a clean installation of Windows XP. Then I tossed Outlook Express and went to Outlook.

The problem has continued and in all of the forums that I have looked at, there does not seem to be a clear answer as to what causes it.

One word of caution. I dont like product bashing, so I always look to my lack of knowledge and understanding first as that is normally where the problem is. Having said that, there is most likely a number of causes for mail sticking in the Out Bin. The main consequence that I have found is that sometimes multipul copies of the same mail get sent. Last year I had one Client who complained that I had filled his box to overflowing with 28 copies plus attached images. He was pretty mad and I dont blame him.

Now to the nitty gritty Nev. You are saying things, that I and many other probably don't follow too well. I understand the warning about messing with the registry, but we all do it anyway and so far I haven't got bitten.

Would you be able to go through what you said again above, but in a bit more detail, so that I and others can follow what you are suggesting. Sorry, but I know that there are lots of others out there that have this problem.

Just to add a couple of things. I didn't have this problem 10 months ago. I can't say if it started when I did an upgrade to a new version of Wingate. I also had an idea that the amount of virtual memory on the operating system disk may play a role in this. The other detail I seem to have as a common factor is that any message with attachment that is under 499 kb, will eventually clear to the Sent Box. Over that it tends to stick and never clear and or sent additional copies. I use a POP3 Proxy through a server with a direct connection to the Internet and both Outlook Express on this machine, as well as mine with Outlook on a WinGate Client with a proxy, both have the same problem.

So, if you get time, would you try to go through the steps that you have previously mentioned, so that I can fix or discount the Wingate Connection for this problem.

Thanks.

Regards, Warren

? Did you import the old registry at this point or was it a fresh install, importing the registry *can* cause this problem if messages are in existence in the sent folder.

Largest message attachment I have tried is 28mb worked really well on intranet only though.

Ok Warren,

1\ Take a note of the highest message number in the ~\wingate\mail\spool\sent folder say it's 000045555.MSG

2\ Drill down to the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Qbik Software\WinGate\Settings\Mail
and find the SMTPUID entry.

3\ Change it to decimal and compare that with the result in 1\ above.

4\ If it is lower than that in 1\ above mail will be in the holding folder. Change it to equal that found in 1\ above exit and try.

5\ If it is higher or = then some other issue [drip feed for example] may be at play here.

As for clients, well I just plainly don't like any thing but NS Messenger for eMail!

Good luck,
Nev.

Hi Nev,

Not sure where to start, but to the question about importing the register seems like a good place. I did a "standard" upgrade, so if the previous register gets transferred/copied in the process, then yes, the old register exists.

The weekend is coming around, so I will follow your guide and see what happens. Maybe a good way to go is to delete everything for Wingate and do a fresh install with the new upgrade. I only have three Clients and there aren't many proxies, so it wont take too much time to start afresh.

I will report what happens.

Nothing further. Enjoy your weekend.

Regards, Warren

P.S. If I could get a 1Mb attachment to go out without hanging, I would be more than happy. You must have big tubes connected to your system to be able to send out 28 Mb without giving the Internet integestion. WATF
