OK, I am not sure that Wingate Firewall is so strong, however it offers some protection againstmost attackes.

@Bob Tucker Firewall= Pare-feu :)

Well, pretty much all modern firewalls are equally "strong" - if you have a bit of software blocking packets on the way from the network card to the system TCP/IP stack then no malicious packets can get to your system without your "authorization" so to speak. The real strength of a firewall depends on the person configuring it.

Yes, you are right, I agree.
and I also noticed that Wingate 6 firewall is better than 5, because when test wingate 5, I frequently faced many attacks that bypassed wingate 5 firewall.

Dear Gene,

I agree with what you say realtive to port access. But, I think you may be a bit modest as the firewall in Wingate 6 is very good. Port cloaking is more effective than with most firewalls we tested. The firewall at a client site here is constantly scanned by someone looking for RPC on a SUN System - so they are obviously guessing wrong on the kind of equipment in use. Kudos! On the minus side, I understand that Wingate 6 supports IPSec VPNs, but I do not see protocol 50 or 51 being passed and I have not been able to get passthrough to work. I am sure that is just a matter that I do not know how to do it.

Kindest Regards,

Bob Tucker

Well, there are certain drawbacks in WIngate firewall (thanks for your kind response, Bob). We do realize that there should be support for other protocol types and this support will be addes in the new version of Wingate. We do have other requests as well and we strive to implement as many security features as possible. There is also another tool which works in conjunction with Wingate firewall - NetPatrol, which takes care of the traffic based on the signatures of the sessions and their statistical properties.

Hardware & system info has been sent to you Genie.

For now, it has passed 6 day without a single BSOD. I will wait 3 other days, then I will confirm that PC-Cillin 2004 Built-in firewall conflict with Wingate Firewall.

Well, the problem in the driver that caused this BSOD was worthwhile fixing anyway - we have already received two reports about the same kind of crash. Thanks for the information!

I am running Windows 2003.

I also have the problem that WIngate takes full processor time.
Could this be the same problem?

Two questions:

1. Have you tried to backup your current history files (HISTORY.DB and HISTORY.CDX in the WinGate installation folder) and then deleting them (After the backup). That sometimes does cause high CPU useage.

2. Do you have dialup profiles defined on the machine? (Even if not in use).

Yes, that solved my problem, a had a Backup Dial-up configured.

When can I expect to recieve the file for my first problem?
I am with a client of mine and I only come here once a week.
If the proxy doesn't crash!

Not sure about the driver - it's just gone past midnight here - so all depends if Genie is still awake. (Generally is)

Hi,

The driver has been sent to you. Let me know if you receive it - some mail servers don't like .sys files attached.

Hi, 3 additional days have passed without receiving any BSOD.

Now, I confirm that Pc-cillin 2004 Built-in firewall is the cause of that BSOD I had.

For those who use pc-cillin 2004 with wingate, even if you set Pc-cillin Firewall protection to low, you will receive a BSOD, the only way to get rid of this problem is to Disable Pc-cillin 2004 firewall.

I haven't tested wingate with all pc-cillin versions, but I can confirm that both Wingate 5.2.3 or 6.0.3, and Pc-cillin 2004 when Installed both, someone of them leads to that BSOD I received.

I am planing to deploy Pc-cillin 2005 and I will see if they still cause problems for each other.

Having very similar problems with the server. Running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition version 5.2.3790 build 3790 on a HP server Intel Xeon 2.4Ghz with 512MB RAM. We have 2 NiCS, one connected to the dedicated internet, and the other one to the internal network.

About a month ago, Wingate 5.2.3 crashed severely and reinstallations did not work, and I opted to upgrade to the version 6. Now im running 6.0.3 and ever since the upgrade, the server has been crashing several times, and I managed to catch a glimpse of the BSOD msg, and it had qbikhkxp.sys as one of the culprits. Also, I realised that Wingate is eating up huge amounts of RAM, fluctuating between 100+ megs to about 300_ megs. But this does not always happen.

After the upgrade to 6.0.3, server would also just hang. Nothing would move and I'd have to restart the entire server. Btw, we also have Symantec's Antivirus running on the server. Please help!

If that motherboard supports DEP (Sounds vaguely like an AMD64 based board) you will need to disable DEP at startup.
