SMTP Serve and outgoin mail

Postby olaf.krause » Oct 05 03 1:23 am

I need a step by step tutorial how to set up the wingate email servers.

OK not for all. POP3 is working. Local mail is also working. But I cannot send external mail. The SMPT server accepts the mails:
SMTP In: 1 message revieved from...
But it does not send it to the SMTP server of my ISP.
SMTP remote: 0 messages delivered to xyz.
I also do not find where to set up the auth for the ISPs mail server (it requires auth)!

any help would be appreciated

thx

WinGate's SMTP server does not support AUTH for outbound mail

However, you don't need to send mail to your ISPs mail server - WinGate will deliver it directly to the other end, which is all the ISP's server would have done anyway.. unless you are on a dialup?

Yes, I use a dial up connection (ISDN). There is an option (allow delivery to trigger dialer). I will try if this also works without setting a gateway.

Best regards

OK it works without gateway (the dialup connection will be established) - the online help confused me a little bit. See also "AOL and sending emails" in the forum.

thx

Hi adrien,

OK sending in principal seems OK, but some target host do not accept dynamic IP-adresses:

----------------------------------------------
Delivery failure
----------------------------------------------

Your message has encountered delivery problems to the following recipients:

removed@test.de

Reason: SMTP Remote: Message 0000000663 not sent, no recipients accepted

----------------------------------------------
A transcript of the session follows
----------------------------------------------

* Beginning processing of domain test.de
* Domain MX record lookup succeeded
* Attempting connection to mail2.test.de. succeeded
<= 220 mail2.test.de ESMTP Postfix
=> HELO nostromo.research.ok-edv.de
<= 250 mail2.test.de
=> MAIL FROM:<olaf.krause@ok-edv.de>
<= 250 Ok
=> RCPT TO:<removed@test.de>
<= 571 Service unavailable; [217.2.84.168] blocked using dynablock.easynet.nl, reason: Dynamic/Residential IP range listed by easynet.nl DynaBlock - http://dynablock.easynet.nl/errors.html
----------------------

since I use a dialup conn I always have a dynamic =>
I have to use my ISPs mail server, but therefor I need smtp auth immediately - or do you have any other ideas?

Regards

hmmmm ok, I see the problem.

Looks like we will need to put AUTH support into WinGate.

Otherwise you would need to use a TCP mapping to pipe through to your ISP SMTP server, and AUTH directly between your mail client(s) and your ISP's server, but then you lose the spooling aspect.

Also - do you know which AUTH method your ISP requires? Is it CRAM-MD5, or PLAIN?

AFAIK plain. I need it not only because of the spooling effect. It also decreases the administration load because I don't have to set up the auth settings for each account/email client (as I would have to do if I would use a mapping)

I looked into the mail delivery code, and it would be a bit of work to put support for AUTH in, although I realise this will be necessary.

So, would you be interested in testing a new engine that I can put together for this?

OK, will take me realistically a couple of days to get it in there and tested.
