How to Installation in WORKGROUP with 6 PC having WinXP &

Postby salimwng » Feb 16 04 9:54 am

Hi,

We would like to install Wingate 5.2.2 ( Build 892 ) and Kaspersky Antivirus Plugin on a WORKGROUP with 6 PC's connected ( NO DOMAIN IS PRESENT).

3 PC have WinXP Pro, 2 of has Win2K Pro and 1 has got Win98Se.

One of the 3 Pc having WinXP is the most powerful one, and we are planning to install Wingate on it.

The workgroup is working fine, all the computers are connected to each other without problems and all 6 have got Fixed IP address ( 70.0.0.1, 70.0.0.2 ...... 70.0.0.6 ) with subnet mask 255.0.0.0 . We have one Dial-up modem connected to a PC and have access to the Internet for the moment.

Our objective, obviously, is to have Internet Sharing among all 6 Pcs, and keep track of all emails and surfing being done on the net. By experience, i know Wingate is the best in this and i prefer to go ahead with this idea rather than using the conventional built-in Internet Sharing of WinXP !

Though i searched for quite a while in the Forums and in Knowledge Base of Wingate about how to go about doing an efficient installation and configuration, i could't come across.

Do you have a link where you can direct me to download something ( E.g. PDF file ) so that i can do the installation ?

Awaiting your prompt reply,

Thank you & kind regards.

Hi Salim

Depending on particular needs an requirements there are numerous ways of setting up WinGate on your workgroup scenario and because each networks requirements are different each setup has its own advantages/disadvantages so unfortunately theres not a document for each scenario.

Firstly in your workgroup scenario I see you are using Public IP addresses (70.0.0.1 etc) on your network which is not advisable as WinGate relies on the use of Private vs Public addresses to determine where traffic is coming from (ie from your Network or from the Internet) May I suggest you take a read of our knowledgebase article on Public vs Private IP addresses.

Probably the most efficient method of setting WinGate on your LAN is using WinGate's DHCP server to assign clients with their Networking details and have them use the NAT (Network Address Translation) method of connecting through WinGate.

With NAT as long as the client machines have their Gateway and DNS entries set to the Internal IP of the WinGate server (either manually set or issued by WinGates DHCP) then this is all they require for Internet access. This saves having to install additional software on the client or configure each client application seperately to use a proxy.

All of the client connection methods (setup, advantages etc) are all explained in detail in the WinGate helpfile.
