WinGate 5.0.0 ENS

Postby Robbiedoo » Feb 20 04 2:41 am

I'm struggling with Extended Networking today.

Site contact tells me this started sometime yeaterday.

As long as the WinGate firewall is enabled, WinGate server cannot browse the Internet.

Disable the firewall and the server is OK

Have selected Medium as the firewall setting, which I understand cancels any other customisation of the firewall. Server still cannot browse until firewall disabled.

I was once advised by Deerfield to install the 5.1 Beta version of the ENS driver to get around another problem and it has been working fine for months. Today I have tried the original driver again but this makes no difference.

Where do I go next, anybody?

Thanks

Also I can see that when users attempt to connect to the Internet, they are using the wrong ports.

For example we have a mailserver off-site, clients on this site are attempting a connection to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:0 for pop mail. This used to be xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:110 as you would expect.

I hope this is a clue

Hi there

When you say the Server cannott browse the Internet are you talking about surfing the net from the actual WinGate PC? Or client machines behind the WinGate Server cannot access the Internet?

The only time WinGate will interfere with someone browsing on the server itself is if the Web browser (such as IE) is set to run through a proxy server and is configured with the local host address of the server (127.0.0.1). You can check to see if this is the case in IE browser, but as I mentioned earlier surfing the web from the WinGate server itself should not be affected at all by Wingate.

If it is the clients who are having trouble you need to check the Port security tab to ensure that LAN connections to the Internet have the appropriate ports still present and allowed. The firewall settings (low, medium etc) will open a set of ports corresponding to the apporiate security required and you can view these under the port security tab.
For more info you can read our Knowledge base articles on the overviews of the various ENS tabs available at the WinGate site.

Well, time was pressing & I was getting nowhere fast, even with your tips. (sorry) so I uninstalled & reinstalled & now all's fine.

Still can't figure out what caused it though, it was working OK one minute but not the next. No configuration changes were made between.

Never mind
It's Friday now, almost 4.30 & I smell beer......
