Can't collect email on client PC!!

Postby howard » Feb 24 04 5:28 am

I have wingate 5.01 installed on on my PC as a server (192.168.0.1) and the WGIC installed on another networked PC. The SMTP and POP3 servers are declared in Outlook Express 5 on the client PC as 192.168.0.1

When using the client PC everything works fine (internet and mail) except that I cannot collect mail from my domain mail server (a .co.uk address) from the client when using Outlook Express. When I try to receive mail with OE5 I just get the logon window asking for my username and password. This produces the error message: "bad username or password"

I can send mail from the client PC using OE5.

Of course I can collect the mail for the user account of the client PC from my own PC (the Wingate server), this connects to the internet via ADSL

To pick up all our email with OE I normally use a format of:

anyone%@mydomain.co.uk

with the appropriate password as the incoming mail server account name.

(My domain server requires the % sign in the account name)

What could be the cause of this problem? Which username and password am I suppose to enter in the OE5 logon window?

Any help would be appreciated, I guess the answer is simple!!

Hi

Sounds like you are still connecting to the WinGate POP3 server for this other account. This could be for one of 2 reasons.

1. Youmay not have set up a second account in OE and set the server address for POP3 to the real name of the ISP POP3 server where the mailbox lives.

and / or

2. If Transparent redirection is turned on in WinGate's POP3 server, and yet it does not have the option "enable proxy" turned on, then it will intercept connections.

I would try firstly turning off Transparent Redirection (on the sessions tab) in the POP3 server in WinGate.

Hi Howard,

Send me an e-mail message and an address where I can send you a brief description; e-mail attachment, on the vagaries of POP3 and SMTP in Outlook and Express. I sure don't know as much as Adrien, but sometimes a bit of visual help can solve the problem. Make sure to send me an address where you can download from. (Internet Mail??)

Two forum readers have recently asked me for asistance and I haven't heard anymore from them, so they have either fixed their SMTP problem or are now permanently disconnected from the "Cyber World". I don't guarrantee a fix, but over the past months, I've managed to learn a bit about e-mails and WinGate Proxies and SMTP and black holes and etc. etc.

You'll find my e-mail in my Forum Registration.

Nothing further, Warren
