Version 5.2.3 Installation Help

Postby adam » Mar 01 04 11:25 am

Hi:

My Server is running Win 98. I have 2 clients each running Win XP home edition. The server is assigned internal IP 192.168.0.1. The clients are assigned 0.2 and 0.3. I have downloaded WinGate Ver 5.2.3 on the server. I have a standard dial-up connection. The two clients can see each other on the Network (MSHOME) and the server can see each client on the same MSHOME network. Neither client can see the server, and hence neither client can access the Internet. I used the PING 192.168.0.1 from each client and I get 4 good responses on each client's computer. I PING each client from the server and get 4 good responses from each client. On the server, if I PING YAHOO.com, I get 4 Time Out responses. Not sure since the Internet connection works fine from the server. I cannot install the new WinGate ver 5.2.3 on each client becasue I can't get the client computers to see the server. I am at a loss. I reinstalled the internal TCP/IP on the server, and the TCP/IP on each client has a correct static IP address. Please help.

Thanks.

Hi Adam

You only need to install WinGate on the Server machine, to get the clients to access the Internet using Network address translation(NAT) or Proxy method of connection. WinGate Internet Client (the client version of WinGate) only needs to be installed on the client machines if you choose to specifically use this method of connection.

The simpliest to get you started is NAT

Do you have the Gateway and DNS entries(found in the the network properties of the client machines) set to the IP address (192.168.0.1) of the WinGate server. This is all that is required for them to be able to access the Internet via WinGate using NAT.

How does the Win98 server connect to the Internet? (modem, router etc)
You have to make sure that WinGate knows about this connection and this is enabled in WinGate so that it can reach the Internet on behalf of the clients. You can read about this in the WinGate helpfile.

Hi Erwin:

I renamed my network connection (MSHOME changed to WORKGROUP) and now the network is functional. I used the deerfield.com installation instructions for a previous WinGate installation. When the version 5.2.3 executable program is opened on either client, it correctly recognized the server on the network, correctly bulleted the client selection, and installed correctly. I have the internal IP adapter as 192.168.0.1 on the server and .02 and .03 for the clients. While I have your ear: can you help me troubleshoot why OE 6.0 no longer works on the client machines? I am getting Port errors (25 and 110) even though there are no conflicts on the server when I check under System.

Thanks.

Adam

Hi Adam

Cool, so now you are using WinGate Internet Client. (WGIC)

Once you have made sure that the clients can see and connect to the WinGate server (Found under the WinGate Servers tab in the WGIC applet) you will be able to monitor their Internet activity in GateKeeper on the WinGate server.

In regards to OE 6 not working correctly, how is your mail setup?
Do clients receive and send mail from the WinGate mailserver or do they get their mail from an external mail server?

The various setups for WinGate mail are listed in the WinGate helpfile so you should check the appropriate scenario for you?
Port 25 (smtp) and 110 (Pop3) are the most common ports used to send and receive mail and these errors indicate WinGate mail setup needs to be configured.
