Upgrade Suggestions

Postby Jim Hollis » Apr 24 04 2:27 am

Hello all. I have recently moved in to a new position as Web Administrator/Network Security Specialist. They are using Wingate in their network to control internet access and to track internet usage. The internal users are connecting to the wingate server which is then going out through a cisco pix. There don't appear to be any problems with the way things are set up other than they are still on Wingate 3.0.5 running on NT4 Workstation.

Part of my responsibilities is to get the new version of Wingate installed on a new computer with a new OS. So far, I have loaded the 5.2.3 version on a new computer running XP Pro. I backed up the registry from the 3.0.5 version and have imported that to the new version and everything seems to look fine. I guess since I'm new to Wingate, I would like to know if this is the best way to do the upgrade and also since the new version has a firewall, is that going to pose a conflict with the pix or can this be set up to provide an extra layer of security.

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

Hi Jim

Your upgrade is generally the way we would recommend so well done.
In regards to the Cisco Pix firewall, although we have not specifically tested this scenario, WinGate has been designed to allow it to work behind a NAT/Firewall.

I would suggest you take a read of our knowledge base article on setting up WinGate behind DSL router solution as this gives an overview of a situation similar to what you have. You can find it here

Hope this helps
