Internet connection through ADSL terminates regularly

Postby hiflow » May 13 04 1:32 am

The connection to the internet through our proxy server is regularly terminated on a random basis without any apparent reason. also the firewall log does not show anything and is always blank.
Wevare now using the latest version of wingate but it also did it with older versions.
The only way to reconnect to the internet is to re boot the proxy server.
Anyone got any ideas why this is happening and how to solve it.
The OS is Win2000 Pro

Thanks

Can you tell us a bit more about your setup? What internal IP address range are you using? How are your clients connecting to the WinGate server? ie a NAT connection, a WGIC connection or straight Proxy? What kind of internet connection do you have?

Thanks,

Matt

The IP address for the LAN network on the proxy server is 10.0.0.100
the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 the proxy server has DHCP enabled so that it automatically assigns IP addresses to the client machines.
NAT is enabled in wingate on the proxy server and WGIC is not installed on any client machines so I assume that the connection by the other machines is using NAT.
The internet connection is ADSL

Why does the firewall window not show any logges events.
Also what is Shields up and how do I use it to test the firewall on the proxy server.

Thanks

Hi Tim,

There's a couple of possibilities as to why you're not seeing any hits on the firewall, if your ADSL modem has a firewall that is blocking the external traffic before it hits WinGate then you won't see anything. Or you could have your external NIC configured as public no trusted yes and WinGate is allowing all connections from the internet. If you go to Options>advanced and select the network interfaces tab you can verify your NIC settings. Make sure your external NIC shows public yes trusted no and your internal NIC is public no trusted yes.

If your client machines have their default gateway set to the internal IP address of the WinGate server then you are making a NAT connection. What is happening when you lose internet connectivity?

SheildsUp is a port scanner, it will scan the ports on your firewall and tell you which ones are open. If you go to their website you'll get instructions on how to use it.
