Relay versus Local Domain

Postby mmakowski57 » May 19 04 8:03 pm

I am using Wingate on a gateway computer and am having it forward all incoming mail for each of my domains to an internal Exchange Server (after checking for viruses of course).

My question...

What is the difference in 1) simply setting the domains up as Relay domains and then Delivering mail to my Exchange server using the "gateway" option on the email delivery tab and 2) setting up each domain as "local" and then telling Wingate that "another computer on my network is handling local mail" and point it to the same Exchange server. I can't seem to understand why both options exist or what the difference is between the two. Does one perhaps check for viruses while the other does not?

Thank you.

Hi Mike

Both options are scanned.

Basically the difference is not entirely clear to me either, which is why I changed it for WinGate 6.0.

Basically the relay domain was designed to allow you to accept mail which you would then use MX resolution to deliver remotely.

The local domain is for delivery to local mailboxes. By specifying that another server on my LAN handles incoming mail, that means that anything that would have been destined for a local mailbox, instead goes to that server.

So there is still a minor difference, since I don't think mail destined for a relay domain will be deemed incoming and sent to the internal server.

The Mail in WinGate 6.0 beta should be a bit easier to understand in this context... basically can now set that per domain, and a domain either has its mailboxes on WinGate or not, and if not, you can either deliver to a specific host, or use MX resolution.

Thanks Adrien. FYI incoming mail bound for a Relay Domain still makes its way to the internal server just like the Local Domain does. I'm anxious to see how you addressed this in 6.0 and will quit trying to analyze the current version.
