Gatekeeper doesn't display anything after upgrading to 6 984

Postby saubrey » Jul 30 04 7:09 pm

I just upgraded to 6.0 build 984. It seems that Wingate is correctly running as I'm able to access the Internet from a client computer, but Gatekeeper doesn't display anything. No Activity Panel, no Control Panel, no nothing. Just an empty GateKeeper window with the GateKeeper toolbar and menu. The instructions for Activiating or upgrading a Wingate 5 license were not very clear, but I did do something and what ever I did said that my WG 5 license was Activated. What do I have to do to have a usable GateKeeper?

Not sure if this has anything to do with anything, but I am using Terminal Services from a client computer to access the computer running Wingate and I run GateKeeper from a Terminal Services window. I've been successfully doing this for 3 years starting with WG 4.x

Hmmmm

It should just work. However I wonder whether there is a problem introduced with running the activation client through GateKeeper on Terminal Server.

Try renaming the directory WinGate\Dll Cache

to something else, restart WinGate... then it won't pick up those DLLS...

they are only needed to view licenses.

Also make sure that the file that was created on activation (the characters of your key with a .lic extension) is in the WinGate directory, and that the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Qbik Software\Key Management\Products\WinGate

value: Key Folder

Points to your WinGate installation directory.

Terminal Services is not the problem. I directly logged onto the WG server and still Gatekeeper does not display anything. HELP! Because Gatekeeper doesn't work, I can't easily configure anything within WG.

Problem #2 - WG is still not caching anything for me. The Cache sub-dir now only has 8 items in it and they are 2 days old. Even with 984, everyonce in a while I see an item added to the cache sub-dir and then it is immediately removed. The WG registry cache items claim that the cache size is 40 (MB I guess)

Other than these two problems, RC2 & 984, I think, are running well for me...I think they are more stable than 5.2.3 for me.

Please help me fix these problems. Thanks, Steve

Sorry Adrian. I didn't see your 2:55 am post before I wrote my previous post. My post was also at 2:55 am. I will try what you suggested when I return home for work tonight....probably in 10 hours or so. Thanks for helping me.

I did this, but it didn't help

A *.lic is present. Although I don't know if the file name matches the activication key

It does.

I did all the above, restarted WG, but still GateKeeper displays nothing

I tried the Options | Quarantine menu item and got the Quarantine Properties dialog box, when I click OK, I get "Wingate Authentication Access Denied"

That sounds vaguely like a logon restriction. Were you using a mixture of Wingate + NT authentication ? WinGate 6.0 onwards does not support either/or mode anymore, but works with only one of the two at a time.

If you are using NT, try logging in with one of your NT users (Preferably Administrator)

I tried all my NT admin accts, and even some non-admin accts. All that I tried get a "There was a problem connecting to the server. Bad password..." WG error dialog. The only username/password that does not give "There was a problem..." error dialog is the Administrator username/password that I established with WG immediately after installing 984, but when Administrator is used, Gatekeeper shows all empty panes.

Is Administrator a member of the Administrators group?

If in doubt, you can see this in the registry, under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Qbik Software\WinGate\UserDatabase\Administrators\Members

Also, do you see a bunch of log entries in the remote control service log file about authentication failures?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Qbik Software\WinGate\UserDatabase\Administrators\Members is empy. There are no entries there. Although Administrator *is* a member of the Win2k Administrator's group. I'm using Activie Directory. I'm guessing that I should add Administrator to the WG Administrators\Members key? Can you tell me how I should add it.

I had turned off the Remote Control Service log and I think it is still off as I don't even have such a log sub-dir.

Hi,

Any stored 'WinGateConfig.reg' files or similar that contain 'summat' like the following:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Qbik Software\WinGate]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Qbik Software\WinGate\UserDatabase\Administrator]
"Name"="Administrator"
"Description"="Built-in account for administering the computer/domain"
"nNTID"=dword:000001f4
"eNTType"=dword:00000000
"Type"="User"
"RealName"=""
"Password"=""
"POP3Password"=""
"OverridePasswordForPOP3"=dword:00000000
"ClientSendTraffic"=dword:4a5e144c
"ClientRecvTraffic"=dword:07cfbf7c
"NonClientSendTraffic"=dword:04d22f09
"NonClientRecvTraffic"=dword:37d3cb6c
"TimeOnLine"=dword:002114df
"OpeningBalanceHi"=dword:00000000
"OpeningBalanceLo"=dword:00000000
"ClosingBalanceHi"=dword:00000000
"ClosingBalanceLo"=dword:00000000
"ClientSendTrafficRateHi"=dword:00000000
"ClientSendTrafficRateLo"=dword:00000000
"ClientRecvTrafficRateHi"=dword:00000000
"ClientRecvTrafficRateLo"=dword:00000000
"NonClientSendTrafficRateHi"=dword:00000000
"NonClientSendTrafficRateLo"=dword:00000000
"NonClientRecvTrafficRateHi"=dword:00000000
"NonClientRecvTrafficRateLo"=dword:00000000
"TimeRateHi"=dword:00000000
"TimeRateLo"=dword:00000000
"AccountEnabled"=dword:00000001
"UserCannotChangePassword"=dword:00000000
"UserMustChangePassword"=dword:00000000
"AuditUser"=dword:00000000
"AuditOptions"=dword:00000000
"EmailAccess"=dword:00000001

Could do the trick perhaps.

All precautions a warnings apply about importing registry files.

Good luck,
Nev.

I got Gatekeeper to work correctly. Not exactly sure how I did it tho. I first imported an old 5.2.3 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Qbik Software\WinGate\UserDatabase\Administrators and restarted WG, but that didn't cause Gatekeeper to work. Then I deleted all the registry entries under Administrators. Then I rebooted win2k and then GateKeeper started working. It seems that WG automatically re-created entries under the Administrators key because now I have some, and I didn't before and I didn't put them there. One thing I noticed was that I now have "eNTType"=dword:00000000 whereas in 5.2.3 I had "eNTType"=dword:00000002. Anyway it is now working. Thanks for your help.

Even with this fix the WG WWW cache is still not adding cached entries to the cache sub-dir. But that is another post
