Unable to install WinGate 6.0

Postby rpj » Aug 04 04 6:08 am

The following recent post got 0 replies

I can´t install WinGateVPN. When it´s about 75% installed I get a message saying that I don´t have the rights to perform some action and tell me to log in using an Administrator account. The problem is that I am using an Administartor account. It´s the original "Administrator" accout but I´ve changed its name. Any suggestions?
I´m running W2000Professional.

I am having the same problem (also running Win2k Pro). I would very much like to evaluate WinGate.

Can anybody help? Thanks in advance.

Can you post a link to that post ? I haven't seen it, and a search of recent posts doesn't turn it up. I'd like to respond to that customer too.

This post gives some details on things you might have to check. I'll keep on looking to see if I can find any more information related ot that.

At the 75% in the installer it is busy modifying registry settings and copying files. It's a bit difficult to predict exactly which files and registry keys it are - but one which might be restricted on your current login is detailed in the subsequent URL.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;158909

Also check that you have full access to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version and all it's subkeys. There are some entries it needs to create for help files, system settings, etc.

Then, make sure that you have full access to the folder you are installing WinGate to (Including the ability to create subdirectories). I don't think this will be the problem area as it should have failed a lot earlier then, but it might be worth a double check.

Then, if you've checked all of these and it still fails, would it be possible for you to copy the directory (In terms of filenames, etc.) BEFORE cancelling the setup at that point. (Perhaps even a snapshot of the Qbik Registry key at that point)

You can do that by opening a command prompt. Switch to the folder you were installing WinGate to and type:

dir /s > files.txt

That will create a file called files.txt in the folder, which you can then email to me. That will help track down the exact point, because I can then see exactly where it has gotten to in the installation.

Success

I'm 99% sure it was registry permissions as you suggested. I tried to clear all Wingate entries on my PC from the stalled installation and in doing so found there were some registry entries that my admin account did not have full control over. Updated registry permissions at the parent level and deleted the entries. Tried the install again and everything worked fine and I'm evaluating Wingate as I type.

Many thanks for you help.

(now to wonder why Win2K doesn't give an Admin control over all reg permissions but that's for another day!)
