WinGate / Windows Small Business Server 2003

Postby wingatertrial » Nov 16 07 11:02 pm

Hi,

I am looking at using WinGate on a Windows 2003 for Small Business Server - which is currently being used to route traffic to the net. Is WinGate compatible wth WSBS and is it a straightforward install to get it to work?

Thanks for you help and hopefully be on the WinGate users list!!

We did test Wingate with 2003 server, by all means - however, as with all the combinations of OS, hardware and software the best course of action would be to download Wingate, activate the trial license and run it - then you can make sure that Wingate fully supports your configuration.

but did you test specifically on Windows 2003 for Small Business Server - it's a different beast altogether!

Hi

I don't think we tested specifically for that variant.

Microsoft rarely changes things like NDIS for minor variants of their OS. Whilst the OS might look quite different, you'll find it's the same under the hood when it comes to NDIS etc. Otherwise MS would be breaking apps left right and centre.

So, we recommend if you're unsure, to just test it. It should become clear within a few minutes whether there will be a problem with that OS or not.

Regards

We also have a number of clients running Wingate on WIndows 2003 SBS - they have reported no problems whatsoever.

The only problem I've seen on SBS 2003, is with the Pre-installed Dell version. Re-installing with the Microsoft Discs cured it. I found other problems with the Dell Pre-install, which were not related to Wingate, so I'd say if it's a Dell Pre-install, reinstall the OS. I've had two turn out this way, so I'm going to lay the blame directly on Dell.

Dell has given us some pain, indeed - the theory is that their NDIS subsystem differs from the standard one and, as kgoodknecht rightly pointed out, re-installing standard environment usually cures Dell blues.
