WinGate removed, Win9x machines cannot access net

Postby NetSmith » Aug 27 04 12:28 am

The network is a number of workstations, mixed Win9x and XP, on a network having a PDC that is NT 4. WinGate was installed, and subsequently removed due to a change in ownership of the company and management of IT.

While the removal was apparently successful, the W9x machines cannot access the Internet after login to the Domain. If login is bypasssed, they work fine (NT4 PDC is assigned a static IP, router is DHCP server for LAN).

XP systems work properly whether loggged-in or not.

Apparently, something login-related was left behind by the uninstall. Any suggestions or direction would be greatly apreciated.

Hi Allan

I take from your description that the Router (with the DHCP server) is the way that all Lan clients now access the Internet.

First thing to check is that the Win9x clients have the correct IP details (DNS ,Gateway) for leaving the LAN to the Internet. (As these could still be pointed at the old WinGate machine.)

Second I would also check the Internet Browser's connection settings on the Win9x clients in case they were set to use a proxy server (i.e. the WinGate machine).

The uninstall of WinGate should not have any affect on LAN authentication or Internet access policies given out or controlled by the PDC.

WinGate is able to utilize the user database (for users and groups) of a PDC(Domain controller) but all Internet access policies that WinGate would have used/implemented would have been created and set from the WinGate gui(called GateKeeper).

Erwin,

Thanks for the information and assistance. It would seem a review of the entire network configuration, settings on all systems, and of active services in the PDC, is in order.
