Vista - Windows Update issue

Postby Naki » Feb 26 08 12:43 am

I'm having a problem with Windows Vista. My main OS, which WinGate is running on, is WinXP Pro. In Vista, Internet Explorer works fine - it prompts for proxy user name and password and opens any site I tell it to. But Windows Update does NOT ask for proxy user name and password and fails with an error Code 8024402C.

How do I setup Vista so that Windows Update asks for proxy user name and password? It used to work last time I tried, but that was in December and it is not working now.
Thanks for any help!

You could setup a policy that allows unauthenticated access to the windows update sites so that the Windows Update client doesn't need to be authed to update.

1. GateKeeper -> Services tab -> WWW Proxy server -> Policies

2. Click Add

4. Goto the Advanced tab

5. Select 'Specify which requests this recipient has rights for'

6. Click Add Filter, then click Add Criterion

8. Select: [This criterion is met if] [HTTP URL] [contains] [update.microsoft.com]

9. Click OK

10. Repeat steps 6 -> 9 for the following URL's
[windowsupdate.com]
[windowsupdate.microsoft.com]

11. Click OK or Apply to finalise the change

This didn't help. The History tab of WinGate shows the following when I try to check for Updates now:
1) Sixteen (16) download.windowsupdate/com/v7/windowsupdate/redir/wuredir.cab requests
2) after that Sixteen (16)
download.microsoft.com/../wuredir.cab requests
3) then Sixteen (16)
www.update.microsoft.com/.../wuredir.cab requests
then again 1) 2) and 3).

Maybe my other WinGate settings are wrong?

I have set up Guests to have access by location (certain IPs only). Also, I have chosen "User may be unknown" (not User may be assumed and not User must be authenticated). Same for Administrators, but with "User must be authenticated". Running latest WinGate 6.2.2 by the way.

I think I found the problem, and it is working fine now, thanks!

The Guest account was disabled, so I enabled it (via the WinGate Control Panel ---> Users tab ---> Users -> Guest - Account enabled.
