No Internet connection on win 98 client

Postby skirabbit » Oct 21 04 5:37 am

Hi

I have loaded a trial version of wingate onto a small (2pc) home network. The host pc has xp and the client win 98. Initially tried to run windows xp networking. I got the network - could trade files etc, but could not get internet connection through host to adsl to work. Loaded wg. Again network works - can see both PC´s - gateway sees client. Still internet wil not work on client.

Please help I am going nuts

ciao

Hi there

How is your client configured to access the Internet through WinGate?
NAT,Proxy, WGIC?.

Does the Win98 machine have its DNS and Gateway set to the IP address of the WinGate machine. This is generally required if your using NAT or WGIC, for the client to connect?

And lastly if the ADSL is a dial up type connection, has this been configured in the Dialer config in GateKeeper to be used by WinGate?

Let us know

Hi

the machine with the adsl connection (host) does not have a dialer - the connection is always on. In addition on the win 98 client I do get in the sys tray the two small linked computers saying my internet gateway is active.

I had configured the network card on the 98 machine to look at the proxy address of the wingate machine, please see other responses to your questions below....

How is your client configured to access the Internet through WinGate?
NAT,Proxy, WGIC?. I am not sure how to set this part up I just ran the wingate "set up this machine as the client" - did not set anything else up.

Does the Win98 machine have its DNS and Gateway set to the IP address of the WinGate machine - yes for the gateway, the dns part is grey and cannot be set. This is generally required if your using NAT or WGIC, for the client to connect?

And lastly if the ADSL is a dial up type connection, has this been configured in the Dialer config in GateKeeper to be used by WinGate?

Hi there

WinGate should have recognised the ADSL connected to the WinGate machine and will use this connection to access the Internet on behalf of the client. (Should be listed in the Network connections pane at the bottom of the network tab in GateKeeper.)

OK so you have installed the WinGate client (WGIC) on the Win98 machine.

You can set the DNS on the Win98 machine by selecting The DNS tab in the network adapter/TCP/IP properties and select "enable DNS" radio button this will make the grey area active, and allow you to input the IP address of the WinGate server. (DNS entry is required for WGIC to work)

Once this is done open the WGIC applet from either the startmenu/programs or the control panel.

Select the "WinGate Servers" tab in the applet and make sure the WinGate server is listed and set to be used. Then your Win98 client should be able to access the Internet.
