Uninstall Wingate completely

Postby Azrael » Oct 29 04 1:51 pm

Hi
I´ve tried out wingate 5.x (dunno anymore which verion exactly) and then wanted to try out 6.0.1 and so upgraded it with it.
But now the try out-period is over and i don´t wanna buy it. I wanted to uninstall it and try out some other programs.
I tried to uninstall Wingate but when i tried to install the other program i got the notice to uninstall wingate first due to some conflicts.
I installed and uninstalled Wingate then several times and hoped to solve the problem, but nothing worked.
I tried out theese prossibilities:
- automatic uninstall
- custom uninstall
- stopping engine and killing all wingate instances before uninstalling
- deleting all wingate entries in the registry (where i was allowed to do it)

I realised that the legacy hook driver is still installed and i dunno how to uninstall/disable it.
First i thought it could be c:\winnt\system32\drivers\qbikhk2k.sys and tried to find it, but it was already gone.

How can i uninstall this network-hook of wingate? Either by hand or with some program!

Azrael

ps.: i´m slowly going crazy....................

From your post, I'm assuming you are using Windows 2000. The uninstall should be completed cleanly, as it uninstalls everything it previously installed, but perhaps some files created during the operation of the application were left behind.

Check the following:

Folder
<program files>\WinGate for anything
<system32>\drivers for qbik*.sys

Registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Qbik Software\WinGate
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\QbikHk2K
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinGateEngine

Those are the primary locations I can think of. If you had the WinGate client installed on that machine at some stage there might be other locations to check.

It depends on what the program is and what it checks for. What is it?

i wanted to try out kerio winroute
in drivers is no qbik*.sys left
no wingate-folders are anywhere

the only traces i can find by hand are the registry-entries which i can´t delete
here is one example:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_QBIKHK2K]
"NextInstance"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_QBIKHK2K\0000]
"Service"="QbikHk2k"
"Legacy"=dword:00000001
"ConfigFlags"=dword:00000000
"Class"="LegacyDriver"
"ClassGUID"="{8ECC055D-047F-11D1-A537-0000F8753ED1}"
"DeviceDesc"="Wingate NDIS Hook Driver"
"Capabilities"=dword:00000000

there´s also nearly the same in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINGATEENGINE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY_QBIKHK2K
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINGATEENGINE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_QBIKHK2K
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINGATEENGINE

i don´t know for what the program checks.
but those entries which i can´t delete confuse me a little bit

Azrael

ps.: yeah, sorry, forgot it, i´m using windows 2000 with service pack 4

ok, it works now
THX

it was the remaining entry of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\QbikHk2K

but the others with the hook: what function do they have exactly and how do i delete them?

I found those on my machine as well (With WinGate installed) which I can't remove on any machines here either. It must be something controlled by the OS, as our installer does not write that.

Those keys only have "Read" access by default. You need to explicitly give yourself write access to do that. (According to MSDN, at least, haven't tried it yet here)

ok, then i´ll leave them for now, as far as they don´t concern the normal usage of the system.

thx very much for the fast and qualified answers.

On a Win2k machine that would be: regedt32 > locate key > set permissions for key to allow write access, in XP regedit is enabled for entry permissions otherwise same process.
