Wingate Tweaking

Postby mcb » Nov 06 04 5:26 am

I have been noticeing some slow down and lag on our network as of late. I had recently tried some bandwidth throttling, but rescinded it since it seemed to be adding to the problem.

Questions:
1. Are there any white papers on some tips on how to run Wingate the most efficiently and increasing network speed?

2. What is the best way to get an idea of where the slow down might be ocurring?

3. How much of an impact would going from a 1.2 Gig PIII system running Wingate to a 3.0 Gig with hyper-threading on overall gateway performance?

Thanks,

Matt

Not currently, sorry.

That's difficult to say. It could be hardware related, it could be software related. If you suspect it's software related, I'd start by checking what traffic is actually going through WinGate. Maybe a packet sniffer / NetPatrol ?

We run NetPatrol to monitor our network, and because it's running in promiscuous mode it sees all the traffic. You can easily track the connections and other events that are happening on your network. It has helped us a lot - in fact, it led to the discovery of a faulty hub that was causing intermittent network problems.

It's available on a 30 day trial as well, might be worth a look at that one!

Hyperthreading definately improves performance, but how much depends on how much you're asking WinGate to do. How many users do you have on your network? (More than 100?) What is WinGate's CPU useage like at an average time of day? The most intensive tasks are scanning (AntiVirus) and logging. You could try turning off any logging you do not require, see how much that improves your performance. AntiVirus is definately improved by a faster CPU though.

Hardware not a concern

We are reevaluating Wingate 6.0.3 on a Windows 2000 Server @ PENTIUM III 500 MHZ so far we don't have any problem with it, the advertised speed of the ISP is almost the same with the speed we are getting.

You should check your line, if DSL, check your modem for interference and or noisy line.
