Wingate ENS and Satellite Connection

Postby alemos » Nov 10 04 3:50 am

I have a client that is evaluating Wingate to control their internet access. They use a satellite connection. After installing wingate, the satellite dish connection refuses to go online. If I install wingate without ENS, it works fine. But then I can't limit bandwidth or total monthly traffic without ENS, or am I wrong?

How can I solve this connection problems?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Correct, you need ENS for Bandwidth control. You can control traffic limits without ENS though. Which version of WinGate are they evaulating? We have a new driver available - will have to check with Gene to see if it could be of benefit in this scenario.

One question, though - when the Sattelite connection is attempting to connect, do you see any firewall hits in WinGate? (Firewall tab)

Also, are the different connections marked appropriately as Internal vs External (Network tab)

I am evaluating version 6.0.3 (latest, I think). There are no entries in the firewall logs or in the firewall screen when I try to connect. The funny thing is, the antena icon is yellow but Internet is working. Without ENS installed, should wingate have any effect on the satellite connection?

I would like to install ENS so I can use bandwidth control, though.

The connections are marked internall and externall correctly.

Another question, since ENS is not installed, is the firewall active? Can I turn it off?

Thank for your help.

Ah. From your original post it was unclear if you currently had ENS installed / uninstalled.

Without ENS it should have no effect.

What particular satelite connection have you got? Do you have other firewalls installed? What are the netwrok cards installed in your computer?

Yes, with ENS installed, the satellite icon goes red. No connection. I had this same problem with PPPoE DSL connection some time ago. I had to install a third-party PPPoE driver to make it work with Wingate.

Now without ENS, the antena icon goes yellow. It should not have a connection, but it does. I can connect to sites using it.

As for the other questions, I am in Brazil and this client has a StarOne (Embratel) satellite conneciton.I can get tech stuff on it if you tell me what to ask for.

It's Windows XP on that machine, but the XP firewall is off.

I'll get the network card info for you tomorrow with the client. I'm emailng him now (the machine is at a location far from me, so I only go there once in a while).

Thanks for now
