MacOS X Mail and Wingate

I have a Windows 2000 Server with Wingate. I can configure and use MS Entourage in Mac OS X (10.3.6), sendinga and receiving emails, but I cannot make it work with Apple Mail Application (with the same account specifications). Is there any explanation for this?
