wingate 6 setup as main mail server

Postby bench » Nov 23 04 12:43 pm

I read the mail server scenarios pdf file for setting up wingate but it's not for version 6. I have attempted to setup wingate as the main mail server, hosting it's own domain, and tried to send/receive e-mail to other domains without success.

If anybody has the recent setup for this I would appreciate it if you could send it to me. info@ddsvc.net

I am not sure why it's not working, think maybe it's the IP that has to go in the domain setup. The client e-mail sends it but it gets returned right away.

wingate can't connect to other mail servers

Postby bench » Nov 30 04 12:43 pm

I have now configured wingate to where it's able to send mail from clients to another e-mail server we have, argosoft, and I am able to receive those e-mails sent. The problem is when I reply to those e-mails, argosoft gives me a winsock error, it can't connect to the wingate mail server.

We have setup a local domain name in the server where wingate is running and it's acting as the main mail server. I followed the steps on how to setup the mail server according to the manual you sent me and it seems to work fine when sending out but not receiving.

I have now added a smtp service under services in wingate but it still does not work properly.

If you could advise me on what could be the cause.
Below is the error message as it appears in argosoft.
ddsvc.net is the domain setup in argosoft and titanicballroom.com
is the domain being hosted in wingate. Below I attempted to reply to
the e-mail received from client info coming from wingate.
ddsvc.net is our regularly used mail server and we are able to send
anywhere.

Help please

Postby bench » Dec 01 04 9:58 am

I just need to get the problem with receiving e-mail going so that I can move to the next stage of implementing wingate. Before I can try and sell the product to clients I need to know how the main features work and that I will be able to get support when needed.

I have read in experts-exchange that the pop3 proxy needs to be configured/activated but I don't know how to make sure it is activated/setup correctly.

I would appreciate your prompt response.

When you say you can't receive mail do you mean WinGate doesn't receive email from the internet, or it doesn't receive email from your LAN PC's? If you are refering to your LAN then can you telnet from a client PC to WinGate's SMTP server (make sure that you dont have an SMTP proxy under services as this will conflict with the SMTP Server on the System tab)? i.e if you WinGate machine's internal IP is 192.168.0.1 then from the client machine open telnet and type:

open 192.168.0.1 25

you should receive a respone such as:

220 ABC ESMTP Service ready

In fact you could also try this approach if it is mails from the internet you are not receiving. Make sure that you have added a bindings policy to the SMTP server to listen on an external interface.

If you can connect to the SMTP server in WinGate, and send email, via telnet, then the WinGate side of things is working correctly, and your issue maybe with argosoft.

You could also turn on debug logging in the SMTP Server and see what WinGate thinks is happening from it's perspective when argosoft errors in this way. That may provide us with some more information.

no success yet

Postby bench » Dec 09 04 9:29 am

I have yet to try the telnet because we have been very busy here. You mention that it needs to have a binding to the wan(external) in SMTP and I have done that but still no luck.

I have tried sending e-mail not just from argosoft but from yahoo, roadrunner and hotmail. They all give the same error, DNS could not be reached.

I will post again with the results from telnet.

client can send within lan but not receive from outside

Postby bench » Dec 18 04 6:40 am

I can send e-mail's to other clients within the lan and I can send e-mail to other addresses outside the lan, for example to yahoo, hotmail, etc.

The problem is when I reply to those e-mail, for example from a yahoo e-mail replying to an e-mail sent from a client within the wingate lan, I get a returned e-mail stating that the recipient could not be reached.

I am hosting a domain in wingate and I have created local mail boxes for the clients. I can ping the domain dns or mail.domain.com. I can also telnet from the client pc as you stated but I can't receive e-mail from the internet.

I have also added the binding policy to the SMTP server to listen on an external interface as you stated.

Any help would be appreciated.

Finally got wingate to work.

Postby bench » Dec 23 04 7:17 pm

Anybody having problems with wingate as a mail server, e-mail me and I'll be glad to help.

The tech support for wingate leaves much to be desired. The documentation
is lacking in-depth details about how to setup the mail server and proxy.

I think the company owes their customer a complete detailed manual instead of having to look at the help section.

After frustrating days of trying to figure out why wingate was blocking smtp e-mail delivery attempts from any server, I found a simple option needed to be checked.

With wingate, it's pretty much a trial and error application.

Yes, but the key is to make fewer errors.

What was the "simple option" that needed to be checked?
