Lingering urls in gatekeeper.

Postby shafique.awan » Dec 09 04 1:58 am

I am having two I am not clear on, since I upgraded to 6.0.3 or maybe I had them before but never noticed.

1. It seems that for some users I see a url that ingers on for days. It seems as if the result is not coming. No user complaints on this just my observation. I am running gatekeeper on another machine and ma logged is a user with admin priviliges.

2. it seems that many computers generate just http:// entries and these etnries just hang in there.

3. I see some computers who are not authenticated just the blue computer and the ip adress and a couple of url entries that dont seem to be moving. I wonder if they are being served. Normally I see a java cofee cup with authenticated users, or the words Authenticated Wingate type users.

Use a timeout option for selected service.
In case with WWW service my timeout is 60 sec. It is quite sufficient for serve user request. Or this request will froze in activity window forever. :)

WinGate 6 introduced HTTP 1.1. This includes connection keep-alives. What you might want to do is double check the URL that it is pointing at and then check what is open on the users computers. It might be something like ICQ or another messenger that gets a consistent feed for adware, etc. (Or just a browser left open on the site)

This could be DNS related. We have seen a few cases of these since the release of 6.0.3 on upgrade scenarios. The most common reason is that a DNS server (The only one, usually) is deemed as unresponsive after sufficient bad replies. It then gets deprecated for a short period, after which it will be retried. One way around this might be to specify your current DNS Server and possibly one 'backup' DNS Server in the DNS/WINS Resolver section of WinGate.

Before you do that, however, verify if this is the problem by checking your WWW Proxy Service and your DNS Resolver log file for the time period in question.

That sounds interesting. When you see those sessions, can you terminate them?

OK thanks for your response however this leads to more questions.

1. If I introduce the timeouts as suggested above would that have any effect on say large downloads that take longer than the time out to complete?

2. In the IPCONFIG I already see two DNS servers (MY ISPS). That is the domain servers we want to be using, shall I put them in the DNS/WINS Resolver as suggested.

3. NO they are not related to messengers as we donot allow users to use messenger on the network and besides they are other sites. as an example I am at this point logged in using the JAVA CLIENT and about an hour ago was visiting http://esupport.ca.com I still see http://esupport.ca.com/prodlist/plistwindow2.htm
Now I have closed the browser since then but this is still hanging there. Due to this I also feel that the response has gone too slow.

4. About the users' not logged in there is no indication in the gatekeeper that they are logged in but I see one users' IP with 12 urls of various files to 4 different sites. and yes I can terminate the session by right clicking on the ip address. That user is long gone home and uses a notebook computer that he takes with him.

Does this have any thing to do with the fact that in the licence section it says that my licence is for verison 5 and I need to upgrade as I am not getting full functinality with this license.

CAN I UPLOAD A SCREENSHOT SOMEWHERE for your reference.

No, it should not. As long as traffic is going through a connection it will not time-out.

Yes, please.

Is the CPU useage signfiicantly higher on the WinGate machine at that time? Closing the browser should close all sessions it has open. If the sessions stay open in GateKeeper it could potentially be an UI bug or might be related to the problems you have with computers generating the http:// entries and nothing more. To test if it's a UI bug, close and open GateKeeper again. If it's still showing, then it's not an UI bug.

The license won't affect this, no. You can email me a screenshot directly to the address listed in my profile, please.
