How to make Wingate work!

Postby frustrated » May 30 05 11:34 am

I have downloaded the latest version of Wingate to attempt a small network of 4 clients and one internet server.
Is there a clear manual for the product?
Are there any tutorials to show a typical setup?
I used wingate for a short period two years ago and didn't have anything like the trouble I am now having.
Initially all I want to do is share the internet connection (two way satellite) using NAT as I thought this would be easy obviously not!
Also if I am using NAT with no client software is the wingate users database relevant? If is is how do you get the login to appear on the client computers?

My sons are pressuring me to try other products for internet sharing so I need to get a solution quickly.

Thanks

Hi,

Quite possibly it may be that WG believes that your adapter to your satellite modem is an internal one and things aren't being routed properly. Check this link out If this doesn't seem to solve your issue post back with details eg OS type, Network card manufacturers etc. and someone will get back to you.

Hi,

Sorry to hear that you're having problems. Could you detail what's going wrong and we'll try to help you out.

I assume that you've successfully installed WinGate and activated a trial license?

Do your adatpers show up in the network tab of GateKeeper? If you're making a NAT connection from the clients then you'll need to have at least one adapter set to internal and at least one set to external. If they don't show up like this in the adapter list on the network tab you can change them by double clicking the adapter. Change the setting from auto detect to the appropriate option.

Can the LAN clients ping the server? If yes can the server ping the clients?

If pinging back and forth works ok can the server ping a web URL? If yes can the clients ping a web URL? If they can't can they ping a web IP address?

If the clients can ping an IP address on the web but not the URL then you're probably having DNS problems. Your server's external adapter should list the ISP's DNS servers, the internal adapter should not have a DNS server listed.

Also, the internal adapter should not have a default gatway specified, this should be set on the external adapters.

For a NAT connection the clients should have their DNS and default gateways pointing at the WinGate server.

Please let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Matt

Adding / refining to what Chris / Matt has said,

1. Could you check whether your adapters were marked as Internal / External correctly? Gatekeeper --> View Menu --> Network --> (Bottom center). The network card facing your LAN should be marked as "Internal" and the network card / modem facing the internet should be marked as "External" ... As shown in image below.

2. Regarding the Manual, and tutorials for the product. We have:
a) Help file available from the Help menu
b) This forum
c) White Papers http://www.qbik.com/resources.php
d) And a knowledge base http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=knowledgebase
e) And for things not covered, please contact our help desk. http://support.qbik.com/
f) Here is picture with IP addresses of a typical setup http://support.qbik.com/kbimage/Dslnetwork.gif

3. Authenticating users through WinGate

http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=kn ... ails&_i=88

Once this is done, you will need to choose your authentication method, whether using Java, GateKeeper or NTLM. Please ask for more assistance on this if you cannot follow the instructions in the relevant support articles.

Thanks for the responses.
The NIC for the internal network is set to internal with IP address configured of 192.168.33.50.
DHCP configured to give addresses in the range 192.169.33.60 to 192.168.33.99
The client computer has received an IP address of 192.168.33.61 with gateway and DNS set to 192.168.33.50.
Client can ping server, server can ping client.
Client and server cannot ping a url but can ping an external Ip. Note the client receved four correct replies the server only two ie the first ping ok the second failed the third ok the fourth failed.
From the previous comments it is implied that there may be DNS problems
So now I need to know what to do to fix this please.
If possible can I have idiot proof instructions this way my knowledge is assumed to be low and I will hopefully not miss anything.

Thanks

As a temporary fix for your four computer network... Ring up your ISP and ask them to give you the ip addresses of two of their DNS server.

Place them in (Windows) Start menu --> Programs --> WinGate --> GateKeeper --> DHCP Service (As shown in images below).

3. Add the router (gateway) --> Double Click the router label you added, and place in 192.168.33.50

4. Add the DNS Server --> Double Click the DNS Server label you added, and place in the two DNS IP Addresses which you got from your ISP.

Now...
Go to the client machines that have already got an IP address via DHCP, and renew the addresses to get the new DNS server.

Win NT / 2000 / XP
(Windows) Start Menu --> Run --> cmd --> ipconfig /renew --> Restart the pc

Win 9x
(Windows) Start Menu --> Run --> winipcfg --> Select your network card from the drop down list, and click the renew button. Restart the pc

Now, that your network should be operational... Can you please send us a configuration report to jamesc at qbik dot com ... And we will try and find what the problem is.

GateKeeper --> Options menu --> Advanced --> Save Report (as shown in image below).

Thats really great to hear your network is now functioning

Can you also check that your internal network card on the WinGate server has no DNS or Gateway set? To check:.

Win NT / 2000 / XP
ndows) Start Menu --> Run --> cmd --> ipconfig /all

Win 9x
(Windows) Start Menu --> Run --> winipcfg --> Select your network card from the drop down list --> More Info button

If those settings are blank, that is correct. I may need to give you a phonecall one day or evening and see if we can talk through this, unless my colleagues give me any other ideas.
