Wingate Relaying, even though NOT SET to relay?!?!

Postby corcoran » Jun 01 05 8:23 am

Guys.

minor panic - just spotted a message in the History, thankfully it's a recent one:

"31/05/05 19:51 - wingate - <system> - 127.0.0.2 - N/A - [email icon] Connection to relay3.exodus.net for domain big communications.co.uk failed. Will retry - 23 secs"

should i be in a wild panic about this? i checked the relay from the internet and it's definitely NOT TICKED in settings. Is this someone just trying to relay off the box and not being able to??

eek eek eeek?!

Hi,

Are you running version 6? If you are you should be able to see the message on the mail queue tab in GateKeeper. If you select it you'll be able to view it in the preview pane, does it look like a suspicious email or does it look legitimate?

no i'm on 5.23.

i checked the 'holding' folder in c:\program files\wingate\queue" and saw it's a mail from one of our users. i just didn't like the 'relay' bit, and the fact that the localhost IP for the wingate server was .2, not .1

i set up my outlook remotely to use the WAN IP of the wingate box as my SMTP server and it didn't like that, so i'm presuming i'm safe and secure (as i can be)

SMTP uses 127.0.0.2 for its internal processes, so that's why you were seeing this, that's nothing to worry about.
