Problem with DNS Resolving results in 100% CPU usage

Postby Ronnay » Jun 06 05 7:12 am

I'm evaluating WinGate 6.0.4.
WinGate runs on a Win2K Pentium 3 550MHz machine ("server") that has two network cards. One card is connected to an ISDN/ADSL modem. The other one is connected to a 3Com PS40 Hub. The hub connects 2 WinXPHome computers and 1 Win98SE computer to the network ("clients"). The latter is seldom used (will function as a test machine for Linux implementation later on).
I use NAT to share internet.

Both XP-machines can connect to the internet without problems, all desired functionality is available.

My problem:
When an URL is entered incompletely in the addres bar of a browser (both IE6 and Firefox are used) then the CPU is running to 100% on the "server".
Example: entering ashram.nl instead of www.ashram.nl causes CPU running to 100%. On clients the msn-search error message appears (http://sea.search.msn.nl/dnserror.aspx? ... =ashram.nl).
After displaying this message the CPU usage of the server is increasing to 100%.
In the Activity screen of WinGate an extra workstation is found named Oilmill16.nl, which happen to be the name of my (WAMP5) website located on my "server". All workstations have reserved IP addresses in DHCP attached to their machine names.
Closing the internet browser makes no difference. I have to stop and start the Wingate Engine to gain normal CPU usage of about 10%.
The DNS Resolver log file grows immens showing repeated messages like:
Request: request [02fda008] A lookup "ashram.nl."
Error: bounce request [02fc9258]<2> to try 3 (no good servers)
Error: bounce request [03d90008]<1> to try 3 (no specific and cannot select)

Trying to browse to ashram.nl on a computer at work shows the message "The page cannot be displayed" while browsing to www.ashram.nl shows the home page.

The properties of DNS/WINS resolver:
DNS: The 2 DNS server IPs of my ISP are shown, Lookup in HOSTS is disabled.
WINS: Lookup in LMHOSTS is disabled, Periodic network enumeration is enabled.
Cache: Lookup of cache resources is enabled, maximum memory usage is (default) 10000 Kb.
Advanced: Add DHCP domain is disabled.

How can I solve this problem?
If required I can mail you the WinGateConfig.txt and WinGateConfig.reg files.

Hi Ronnay,

Probably off track, but it could be useful to have the config examined.

Did you browse through: http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?t=2834

Also, by any chance has the internal NIC to the clients a gateway?

If so it should be removed.

Report back and someone will have this working in a jiffy!

No, I didn't before, because searching for DNS Request doesn't retrieve that topic. However searching for 100% CPU should have. Probably I didn't search for that string.
Now I have read the topic. The problem I had after installing WinGate was no access to the internet at all and no possibility to let WinGate connect to the internet. That problem was solved by setting the usage of the NIC connected to the ADSL modem to External instead of Internal. Now WinGate uses the DialUp connection which is mentioned in the Network tab as an external VPN (Device = WAN Miniport (PPTP)).
Other issues mentioned in that topic are not applicable to my problems.

The internal NIC has no gateway. However, it had a primary DNS (IP-addres of the server). After removing the primary DNS (now both NIC's have only an IP-addres and a subnet mask) the problem of 100% CPU is solved.

Do you still want to receive my WinGateConfig.txt and/or WinGateConfig.reg? And how do I get them to you?

Hi Ronnay,

No don't send the config to me, it would ony be appropriate to send to a Qbik staff member at their request.

Glad the evaluation of 6.0.4 is back on track, you'll like it!
